virgoFurther crackdown (Saturn) on people’s health habits (Virgo) in the news:

Employers ponder tough tactics to halt smoking

“Howard Weyers tried the “carrot” approach by giving his employees incentives and encouragement to quit smoking. But when that didn’t work, he resorted to the stick. A big stick.

Weyers, owner of a health care benefits administrator in Lansing, Mich., gave his 200 employees an ultimatum in 2004: Quit smoking in 15 months or lose your job…”

and the article say he extended the ban to hit the spouses of employees, no less, montiored by blood test.

so what’s next? what about fat people? sugar-freaks? drinkers? people that don’t take their vitamins? what about people going through divorces? i’ll bet they require more medical plan resources with those mental health visits.

yuck.

Remember when women could be fired for getting married or pregnant? That’s what I think about this crap.

goddess – yes I bet this expands all over the place and not only that – it will have support.

Others want their costs down, see? Divide and conquer.

Fat smokers etc. actually save healthcare $$$$ in the long run, because they don’t live as long to generate more and more healthcare costs.

One study

Jilly – too funny. I NEVER saw the other end of that.

The only thing I can think of about this guy making people quite to work for him is that a) on some level he’s upholding his business model and b) lucky the children who aren’t exposed to second hand smoke and suffer the extra ear infections

But wow. I had a conversation this morning where a guy from another country bragged to me that his big brother was bigger than my big brother ie government regulation and watching of private life.

I have to laugh to release the stress this type of stuff causes.

I’d tell someone like that, “Fire me, and see me in court!”

Under no law is this employer action legal.

Much more effective is to offer a bonus to employees who successfully quit smoking.

Money works so much more effectively than a big stick.

This Saturn in Virgo shit is so gross. I can’t bear this sanctimonious stuff in some Virgos I’ve met. Who are they to penalize anyone for their health habits? The media gives girls enough flack/contradictory messages for how they keep their bodies.

Virgo rising and Virgo Moon, and a smoker and pissed right off with the way things are going. I don’t force my health views or lack thereof on others and deeply resent being forced to dance to this new smoking deal that is springing up everywhere. I live in Canada and similar bs is happening here. I pay my damned taxes and I don’t blow smoke in anyone’s face so I wish people and government would find something better to do with their time, like clean up their own shit and leave me the hell alone. I know it isn’t good for me but trying to strong arm me doesn’t go over well with this Taurus. I will quit when *I* am damned good and ready.

Dina-Virgo isn’t necessarily controlling, although it can be. But Virgo’s control (in my experience) is very often self-directed as well. The energy of Sat in Virgo is out there, and can be expressed many ways. The overt controlling is just one of them.

I like the Saturn in Virgo energy when it’s expressed as learning about one’s own health, taking responsibility for my own wellbeing instead of relying on experts, for example, or making responsibly choices that enhance my experience.

Exercise is a great way to express Sat. in Virgo, or healthy eating, or working towards a healthy environment. I think the key is avoiding a punitive, judgemental expression of the Saturn energy. Work can be oppressive or work can enhance our experiences. Our choice.

goddess- let me be specific. I don’t mean controlling. I don’t think Virgo or Saturn in Virgo is controlling. I absolutely agree that Virgo control is self-directed. I meant more along the lines of overt or covert criticism and disapproval of others, which I have observed. I LOVE the self-directed Saturn in Virgo energy, it is exactly what I need. I don’t love the way it is being expressed in general crackdowns on health habits. Do you mean that this kind of stuff is more Saturn energy?
