‘£10 licence to smoke’ proposed
“Smokers could be forced to pay £10 for a permit to buy tobacco if a government health advisory body gets its way.
No one would be able to buy cigarettes without the permit, under the idea proposed by Health England.
Its chairman, Professor Julian Le Grand, told BBC Radio 5 Live the scheme would make a big difference to the number of people giving up smoking…”

Quite honestly … I think it would be a good idea.
It is not as if the tobacco companies are the good guys.

Hm. I’m with Kashmiri–it’s just another way to goudge citizens.
And Piya, I’m not sure I agree with you–if nothing else, tobacco companies are perfectly legitimate businesses that provide jobs and money to our economy. And at least the dangers of their products is upfront (now, anyway), unlike so many companies whose production methods are very dangerous to people’s health yet continue to fly under the public radar so that their poisons remain largely undisclosed…
Besides, smokers actually *save* other people money! This article relates how:

Heh. Makes you wonder, just who’s bammin’ *who*, wot?
Piya – thanks for writing that because I think there are all kinds of people who feel just like you but would never say it publicaly. And I think this is the case with all kinds of things of this ilk.
I don’t get the license part. It’s not like it takes a special skill to smoke. Personally, I want to hose smokers down when they light up but I know their gonna keep doing it (after they beat the crap out of me and then go buy more cigarettes).
I’m tired of the pc acceptance of singling out groups for discrimination. if they want to do away with smokers… and lets be clear, I think there’s a difference between being against smokers and being against smoking… they should just criminalize tobacco and be done with it. cos, wow, that works so well too.
I should be clear. I don’t think smoking is a good thing but I do think this is a slippery slope. when they come for you remember that you didn’t stick up for the groups they came for before you.
I’m not a smoker and I don’t like smoking. But aren’t cigarettes already taxed?
Am I going to have to have a license to buy chocolate ice cream?
I wonder if they will make it harder to buy cigarettes than the state of Illinois did for that lost soul who just shot 6 people to buy a gun???

Considering Britain already charges a TV license, council tax, high Value Added Tax, income tax, high prices on everything…I think this is another attempt of the government to get more and more and more out of their citizens.
I like the idea that the government pays ME the equivalent of $20 every time they neglect to protect me from pollutants, GMO food, carbon-monoxide, etc etc.
Give me a freaking break.
