Here’s an excerpt.

Andrew Stern writes:

“…The contributors gave first prize to the phrase “a perfect storm,” saying it was numbingly applied to virtually any notable coincidence.

“Webinar” made the list as a tiresome non-word combining Web and seminar that a contributor said “belongs in the same school of non-thought that brought us e-anything and i-anything.”

Similarly, the list-makers complained about the absurd comparisons commonly phrased “x is the new y,” as in “(age) 70 is the new 50″ or “chocolate is the new sex.” “Fallacy is the new truth,” commented one contributor.”

Oh! Oh! I have plenty!

My current pet hate is…”no pun intended” – YACK! Why do people have to say that in the same way all the time? Aren’t there any similar words in the dictionary?

English is not my main language but I hear that enough as it is.

As long as we feel there is something wrong, or we feel sick of a phrase, we are sane. Because it’s sanity to feel sick in face of madness. In all languages :)

I am sick of the following two phrases, and I’m sick of people on commercials SCREAMING AT ME. I am not deaf! ;-)

1)Think outside the box

2)Group synergy

Tam, haha, yes. Corporate phrases make my eyes roll so much they fall out of my head (it’s kind of embarrassing).

Generally I am not bothered by most phrases, but rather incorrect usage or pronunciation. Frequent offenders:

“irregardless”
“literally”
“particularly” (many people pronounce it “particyerly”)
“anyways” (it’s not plural! It makes you sound like a high school student!)

This is all Mercury in Virgo stuff, though, and not new to me. I could go on.

I’m sick of ‘so’ being used instead of ‘very’ or otherwise:

I’m soooo ready to quit
He’s sooooo over his job
We’re soooo done
That’s sooooo not me
That’s sooooo not her

Oh yeah, and forget about ‘gay’ and ‘retarded’ being in vogue, they make you sound like a fucking undergrounder.

Undergrounder. Ha! I just made up a word. You like? Whoops, I hate that one, too!

ha! i was just looking at my own writing, and thinking, “Man, i’m really sick of the over-use of ‘post-9/11′… i need to think of something new.” guess i’m not alone.

i want to axe bigger-than-necessary words. “utilise” instead of “use,” etc. also, the phrase redundant phrase “social networking” – and the use of “Facebook” as a verb.

while we’re at it, it’s not a phrase, but i want to axe the tendency of the media to pit two “sides” against each other, so they can pretend they’re having a fair and balanced conversation about something.

My mom always says:
“And things like that.” after she gives me a family or personal update.

I always say:
“Just kidding.” after a sarcastic joke. I’m horrible.

I hate the term “beef up.” Hate references to natural phenomena in political speech, i.e., “tidal wave of change” or “prairie fire of hope and zeal”

I get steamed at a particular casino advertisement, something to the effect of ‘come on over here & start really living’. As if I’m dead already and nobody bothered to mention it??

Man, this ‘fake living’ is really getting me down.
