“Yeah we were in trouble. We were doing all kinds of things you aren’t supposed to do. (He was off duty but on a base). We were having all kinds of fun right up until we got caught and this guy, he was a (insert rank, I don’t track that thing) asked me in this stern voice, all serious… “Sergeant Soldier, what’s going on here?”

I laughed.

“Yeah, and I was a little drunk. Actually I was a lot drunk. And there was no way I was going to tell him what was going on there. We were in a enough trouble as it was just from what was obviously going on there. There was no way I was going to tell him more than already met the eye, get us in worse trouble, so I told him a lie, of course.”

“What happened?”

“Well I guess it wasn’t a very good lie because he knew it was a lie and he said… this was in a stern voice: Sergeant Soldier… he got right in my face to say this. He said, I am used to getting a proper answer from my men when I ask them a question. I am not accustomed to having them lie to me like this. So I looked him in the eye back and told him, well sir, I understand that. But in Special Forces our superior officers don’t ask us a question unless they want to hear a lie. It is understood that if a Special Forces soldier’s mouth is moving, he’s going to be lying, sir. Yes sir, this is how it is.”

I roared. “What happened to you?”

“Oh he got all blustery. He was going to kick my ass, kick me out of the army, throw me in jail for that… all kinds of things he was going to do.”

“What actually happened?”

“Nothing. I got sober and called my people in the morning. They were pissed but I was too valuable at that point so they just sent me on a mission real quick. They sent me out of the country and that guy tried to do something but they made impossible with paperwork. Yeah, you can go after him. He’ll be back in about 18 months… or is it 5 years? When will he be back they asked each other, looking around. Anyone know? He’ll probably be killed but if not, he’ll be back eventually and you can file your papers then. Just get ‘em ready and we’ll let you know when you can file them… soon as he gets back.”
