angela davisI wanted to come back on the Triple Pisces. I rejected that woman, hard and I wanted to explain what drove me mostly because although the story stands alone, things are far more interesting when you’ve privy to more of the root.

I try to expose the roots when time permits which is why I think I so many Scorpios read here. It makes a nice meal. It makes things more satisfying but anyway, I went to see Double Aquarius, Angela Davis speak.

You can read her rich history but I saw her about 15 years ago in the early 90′s which was post her history, history when hers was a household name circa, 1970-72. In whatever case someone invited me to hear her speak (about rape) and having nothing better to do that evening, I showed up and was completely taken with her.

She was beautiful for one thing and she was a phenomenally powerful speaker. Sitting there in the middle of the predominantly African audience, I was simultaneously stupefied, mesmerized and enchanted by this force of nature who no longer sported her trademark afro. Davis was angry about rape.

She was incensed but she said she did not think the problem would or could ever be solved by women. She said the only way we would get rid of rape in our society is if men decided to get rid of rape in our society. In other words, men would have to stop supporting it.

angela davis astrology chart natalShe said men supported rape and other forms of violence against women when they continued to play basketball with a guy they knew beat his wife the night before. The audience was full of African men and she was addressing them specifically. She was challenging them and pressuring them with a fervor and intensity that was uncommon to say the least and I thought she was right. But being me, I could feel the people around me start to twitch. And feeling them start to twitch, I was pretty sure something was going to happen and then it did.

“Men should be on the front lines against rape!” she said with enormous punch and power. This woman (with Pluto opposite her Sun) challenged every man in the room. “Why aren’t you fighting for your women, your wives, mothers and your daughters RIGHT NOW! Why do you continue to support RAPE?” she said in a defiant challenge characteristic of the Mars Uranus conjunction in her chart.

::twitch, twitch::

But then she said it. She told the African men that not only should they stand against other men who are violent towards women, they should also be on the front lines fighting alongside the gay community. She said the gays were but another minority group and everything that happened to the blacks, happened to the gays. She said the blacks and the gays ought to join forces and fight together and you know what happened? 70% of the audience stood and walked out. Never seen anything like it before or since. You’d have thought she just killed a baby or something and I felt my heart rip apart in my chest.

gay pride flagFor some reason this was personal to me. I was not a detached observer and it was like watching fabric being ripped apart. I stayed. Of course I stayed and I listened to every word she said and I decided then and there I would never support rape. I would never play basketball with someone committing acts I consider to be heinous and this is why the triple Pisces had to go. And it’s interesting, one more bit…

My mother was also a double Aquarius (with Pluto opposing her Sun, even tighter than Davis). And she used to say the worst that could happen to a person is when “decent people don’t want anything to do with you.”

No wonder that speech resonated.

Have you ever pulled away from a person on principle?

yep. many a times.I have ostracized my mother because of the way she treats my brother and me. I still haven’t managed to cut her off completely, and I don’t know if I will ever, but this has let her know how things are. She said that me leaving her was a slap in the face.

Yes, but Cancer me doesn’t always tell them why. Annoying, I know.

I have backed off from one friend for very similar reasons to what you mentioned – she treats her husband badly. But, I am also friends with her husband, so by cutting her off I am cutting him off too. Wouldn’t be appropriate for me to continue to be his friend whilst shunning his wife, especially since I was friends w/her first…

Oh man – do we have to persecute a woman even on Thanksgiving?!

Persecute a woman? I thought I was honoring one. And who is we?

Hmmm…I sense someone is confused. Thank you for writing of Angela Davis and honouring the intelligence she possesses.

I pulled away from my sister who during a family dispute, and the pain it caused me was immeasurable. I’m sure she was in pain too, but she refused to speak to me for almost 3 years despite my efforts to keep connected. (My ‘pulling away’ was subtle, and it was one incident only.
However, my sister has Pluto Rising and an 8th House Sun/Moon and picked up on my retreat immediately, BOOM the guillotine went down.
We’re back together, and things are better…I’m happy about it. I’m pretty sure she missed me, too. Incidentally she called me up almost the exact time Pluto hit my Ascendant at 26 degrees Sag.

As a member of the African community, it makes me so ANGRY that at least 70% of the community is so arrogant to believe that they are in no way related to members of the gay community. I have this arguement with my older brother all the time, he claims that plight against the GLBTQ community is nothing in compared to the plight against the black community… why… because apparently people within the GLBTQ community have a choice on whether or not to be gay, and black people do not. They cannot hide the color of their skin, the way gay & lesbians can hide their sexual orientation. Everytime we have this discussion I feel like decking him in the face.

I always tell him that he should be horrified and concerned that anyone in this world is willing to lynch anyone for any reason, and the fact that you’re not protecting your gay brothers and sisters ( mind you one of our sisters is a lesbian!)shows that there will always be an opening for hate and violence against anyone for any reason. Just because they’re not attacking you right now, doesn’t mean they won’t turn around when their done with the gay man down the road.

The African community is in dire need of a wake up call. Get off the high horse and stop with the moral judgement. Not too long ago it was us running for cover, and with the current climate these days I wouldn’t be surprised if it started to build more steam again. I don’t think 70% of that room will be able to walk out if they’re shackled in the same chains again the GLBTQ community.

Janelle I couldn’t agree more. It seems like a very human trait though.

Makes me think of this saying:
In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.”

(except that I think the “they” is the collective, not one particular group, not even republicans)

70% of the people walked out of that room, because the think denial is a river in Africa. They say, “She’s not talking to me”, but in reality she’s talking about the things that they hide from their friends and society. Angela Davis has received some hatred from some black men because of her views on rape, but I say to these men especially black men; “If you’re not a duck quit walking and quacking like one”.

There is a great radio ad campaign aimed at men. It is all about men taking a stand against sexual abuse and rape.

Yes I have on principle though I don’t know if that counts here because I can not separate it from underlying emotional motives.

Powerful orators such as Davis bring tears to my eyes and move me to the core. It must have been something to be in her presence and feel her energy in person. It’s great you had that experience.

I love this story. I don’t have anything to add to the comments. Except I do not watch Woody Allen movies anymore. Not since he started an affair with the young daughter of the mother of his son. Likewise, Kobe Bryant and Ben Roethlisberger only get boos from me.
