Open Question: The Sun In The Horoscope… And An Accidental Book Review: “Apollo’s Chariot” by Liz Greene
Ask the collective…
A reader asks:
“In the midst of it all, how relevant is our sun sign anyways?”
I know it is fashionable to do away with this or that… the basics of astrology, but I think the Sun sign is enormously important, provided you want to shine, create and be vitally alive, that is. But don’t take my word for it. Read Liz Greene’s freakishly good book, Apollo’s Chariot: The Meaning Of The Astrological Sun
and you will never ask yourself this question again. I couldn’t believe this book.
It’s a total inspiration for artists or anyone who does creative work of any kind which by all rights should be each of us. It is so good and so potent I wondered throughout if an artistic person who knew no astrology at all might be able to access it and I think this is the case. It’s sort of like the “truth”. Everyone can recognize the truth because it resonates and this book has that quality.
And I never write in books or highlight them. Being a lifelong heavy user of the public library, I think this is sacrilegious. But I do bookmark bits I want to go back and read again and it did not take me long to notice I was bookmarking every page of this book. ::smirks:: Jeez, Elsa. Guess you’re going to read this one twice.
Bottom line, the Sun is your creative self. I can’t imagine discounting this. It seems more sensible to know everything you can about the Sun in your chart.
Anyone else?

Fantastic!
I do feel like that about Liz Greene’s writing, most of it seems so logical, I couldn’t possibly try to contradict what she says. She must be right, I think to myself.
I want to read this one because I truly want to be more and more like my Sun, no matter how many flaws it has and I want to be creative too.
Thanks Elsa!
Hi Elsa. I’m wondering whether there’s some confusion here about the relevance of the Sun sign in the birth chart and the relevance of Sun sign astrology. Not the same argument. I don’t know a single astrologer who would deny that the Sun sign is important or who would propose that we use something else as our main “identity.”
Twilight! I totally hear you! That’s such a good point, and one I think everyone could relate to at some level

Sun sign must be very relevant, because it’s what kept me interested during all the years I didn’t have computer or access to any deeper information about “proper” astrology. If simple Sun sign astrology hadn’t seemed to work at all, I wouldn’t be here now, I’d be learning Swahili or something!
I think that as long as we read about and learn all we can about ALL the Sun signs, not just our own and those nearest to us, it builds up a good base of knowledge from which to start on the rest, because the flavour of the signs remains broadly the same for all planets found in them.
