Jupiter In Sagittarius: Mashing The Cultures – Buying Produce At H-Mart
Astrology in Real Life
Jupiter and Sagittarius are about expanding your horizons, especially when it comes to other cultures. H-Mart is the awesome Asian supermarket here. The place is huge and the produce is section especially grand. It is an enormously popular place to shop for people of all cultures and in fact they are now calling it an “international supermarket” which is just as well because although it is Asian owned everyone and their brother shops there.
So today I was in the quick check line and I was amused when the woman ahead of me made a great show of counting the items in her basket. She had 10 not 11 and though I could of cared less, I thought she was cute. I unloaded my stuff onto the conveyer belt behind hers and she scanned.
“What is that?” she asked pointing to the 2 spaghetti squashes I was buying. “What kind food?”
“That?” I said, pointing. “It’s spaghetti squash.”
“Spaghetti?”
“It’s squash.”
“That’s a vegetable? That’s no a fruit?”
“Vegetable. It’s a squash. When you cook it, it comes out in strings like spaghetti. It looks like spaghetti.”
“How you cook?”
I started to explain… you can roast them or just cut in half, turn upside down… microwave if you’re in a hurry. “I will stir fry,” she said, interrupting. “I no cook like you guys.”
I laughed. I wondered what kind of guy she thought I was, but realized I had no idea what kind of guy she was either. ::smiles:: However I knew we both liked vegetables and were interested in new ones and that was something.
“I am trying to learn to cook like you,” I said. And I tried to explain how spaghetti squash was hard as a rock and came apart when cooked. I told her if she was going to stir fry she should peel it and this might be challenging. Cut into cubes, but it would fall apart as it cooked.
“What you put on that?”
“Garlic and butter.” I said.
“Okay,” she said before I could finish. I was going to mention parmesan cheese but figured that was for way in the future if ever, anyway. Sort of like me with some of the potions I see in this store. What is normal for some is going to be an acquired taste or others.
“Next time, I try,” she said.
“Okay then,” I said grinning. “I hope you like it.”

Haven’t written on this topic for awhile, but anyone else making progress with their (Jupiter) foriegn studies?

Yes. I was extremely priveliged to meet and record an interview with a local indigenous elder.
Foreign to me – yet more local than the locals.
The kids have been begging me to take them to the H-mart for ages now. Honestly I keep putting it off after I read one of your posts about how busy it is on the weekends. One of my best friends is Chinese and has been teaching me to cook for a few years now, though over the phone lately since she moved to Seattle. I taught her how to make pasta and sauce in return. My kids want to go to the H-mart for the spicy ramen noodles she left with us when she moved (they were too spicy for her family). My next project is her recipe for sesame chicken which is just about the best thing I have ever tasted and ruined me for restaurant sesame. After that I want to move onto middle eastern since chicken shwarma is just about my favorite thing in the world.
Carrieg – if you go once, you’ll go again. Especially if you like produce. They have everything from virtually everywhere in the world and it’s all stupid cheap. Like 30-50% off what you pay at the normal grocery. The store entices you to try new things. It just begs you. But yeah, they are busy all right. Always.

Oh yes. I moved in with an Irishman who has traveled the world. Last weekend I had black and white pudding for breakfast. I cook things I grew up eating for him – Southwestern TexMex sort of things and other basic down home american fare. It isn’t just food either. He’s very into music so I get to hear lots of new things and I love hearing not just his accent but the way he phrases things differently.
