rattlesnake“I think we’d have outgrown a lot of that too, P. If we would have stayed together and gotten married? I think we’d have calmed down as we got older and matured.”

“I don’t know.”

“Well I think we we’re like two snakes,” he said. “You don’t want to get bit by a baby rattlesnake whatever you do. They can really mess you up.”

“They can?” I shouldn’t have to be asking. I’m the one from the desert, the soldier is from the world.”

“Yeah, they can. And people think it’s because the venom is stronger but that’s not it,” he said.

“What is it?”

“It’s that they hit you with everything they have. The inject everything they’ve got when they bite you and that’s how we were. We were young, P. Like baby rattlesnakes and we both have a lot of energy. Both of us can be dangerous. But I’m pretty sure if we’d have stayed together we’d have gotten better control of ourselves. We’d have gotten more sophisticated and learned that when it comes to energy, a little of ours goes a long way.”

Are you a baby rattlesnake? Or do you feel you have some mastery over what energy is available to you?

I think I’m a baby rattlesnake, yes. I’m not young but I haven’t yet learned to control my power.
