My friend, Stevie told me to put my knives away. You know. Don’t leave any knives in the dish drainer tonight. Here’s the details:
Stevie writes:
I heard a feng shui tradition that you are not supposed to leave your washed knifes in your dish drainer out over night for New Year’s Eve because it is a symbol for bringing painful experiences into the New Year or ushering in new ones. I heard this/read it a couple of years ago and i find myself always looking at my dish drainer before midnight…”
I don’t know about you, but I put my knives away, so I’m good to go!

Funny, for some reason at 11:30 last night I actually did the dishes and put them away, including 3 sharp knives. I never do this. The dishes can damn well wait until I’ve finished more important things—like reading blogs or gently tending my neuroses.

my knives are perpetually dull. i’m under the influence of someone who wiped the blade on the pantleg before putting it away.

I read this post last night just after doing the dishes. There were two knives in the dish drainer so I went and put them away. Didn’t want to take any chances! Happy New Year!

There are a lot of Chinese beliefs regarding how to make the new year a good one. I believe one includes not showering so you don’t wash away your good luck! I think I like your suggestion better lol
I haven’t even *got* a dish drainer–I use a dishwasher! So my knives (when clean) are never out in the open, regardless. How very fortunate…
They DO tend to be dull, tho’–even new ones. I’ve never quite understood how I manage that. So yeah, kashmiri, I guess I can relate. Whenever I want to be able to actually cut anything with any efficiency, I use my roommate’s knives instead of my own.
I wonder if that symbolizes my difficulty in severing ties to folk? Or maybe that is just me being a sentimental Cancer. Or maybe my dull knives is to do with a 12th house Mars tied up by Saturn…
Anyway, I’ve no idea where my knives currently are. I wasn’t at home last night, and it never occurred to me to check my beau’s drainboard for knives. Hm. AND I took a shower this morning.
Do these Chinese beliefs still work if you’re not in China? I hope not!!!
Never put knives in a dishwasher. It dulls them! At least this is what the manufacturer of my knife set recommended:D
Tinkerer, I sometimes think the dull knife represents a facade of sorts, you know, looks menacing, but is almost useless (if you talk of my knife, that is).
Last Christmas I asked my mom for a knife for a gift–”a really sharp one,” I emphasized. She bought me a used one that “needs a good sharpening.” Right! Did I sharpen it? Uh uh!
Then I went to a party with a secret Santa draw, and I drew what? A knife! But where I was hoping for a culinary pro like Henckles, it was a made in China knockoff. Sigh.
I don’t have physical troubles cutting ties with people (as in breaking it off and moving on), but I do think of them long, long after they are on their way, and that is a different kind of tie-cutting. What do you think?

Just finished the dishes. Guess I’d better go put those knives away!!
Btw: it is NOT TRUE that Corningware/Corelle dishes are unbreakable. Just broke another bowl. Second one this month. (Other pieces in the past too.)
