It’s amazing how history repeats. The soldier found a local fight club and has contacted them to join. This is from their website:

The soldier and I watched La Bamba this weekend, a movie I have never seen for some reason. It was striking because the guy who plays Ritchie Valens brother in the movie looks astonishingly similar to the soldier’s old friend, Speedy and acts like his to some extent as well. Then there is the love story of course.

The soldier wound up singing “Oh, Donna” to me all weekend, substituting my name for hers which was both embarrassing and amusing and we talked a lot about men in love… some of these conversations are coming up.

It’s very heartening to hear from a man’s man about men loving women. Turns out they really do love us a lot of time, too bad we don’t register this as well as we might. Because if I had any doubt about what he was saying when I went looking for the song on youtube, I found one man after another after another after another of all sizes, shapes and colors singing this torchy song so apparently they can relate.

“You have an advantage,” the soldier said when we were 80% through our weekend brawl.

“What?”

“All my friends are dead,” he said. ‘Where are my friends, huh?”

I laughed because of the look on his face. “They’re dead,” I said. “Your friends are dead.”

“Hell yes, they’re dead. If Speedy was sitting right here, what would he say?” he asked.

“I’d have some things to say to him,” the soldier said.

“Yeah? I bet you have some things to say to me too” I said egging him on.

“P, I can’t say anything to you. You’re my girlfriend! But if you weren’t, then yeah. I’d have some things to say. I’d have punched your lights out long ago.”

I stared.

“Yeah, if you were Speedy I’d have punched you on day one.”

“No kidding.”

“Hell yes, the stuff you say? I’d have punched your lights right out.”

I snorted. We’re beginning to make up, see. And by the way, he does not have cancer and my blood is excellent. So if you like us, hooray and if not… well we’re not going anywhere. We’re like these two fixtures.

“Look I don’t like him,” I said regarding some young guy trucker who had attached to the soldier like a baby on a nipple yesterday. “I can hear him and he’s rude.”

“Well P, this is New York. When have you ever heard someone from New York say please?”

“Plenty of New Yorkers are polite. Matter of fact most New Yorkers I have ever met have been polite. That guy is a JERK!”

“Speedy Gonzales never said please,” he said, referencing the enigma that is Speedy. “I use to have to bust his chops for it. Rude New Yorker.”

“Yeah, well they came and got me to go on this mission. Speedy too. They got him too and we were both just kids. We were teenagers and they don’t take kids on things like this but in this case they had no choice,” he said.

“Yeah, there were very few people who could do the technical stuff Speedy and I knew how to do. It was brand new technology. The technology we were using was months old.
