Last night after Vidroid went to bed the soldier and I got in the tub, it’s become a habit. He thinks all couples with children should do something like this by the way - make time to focus on just each other but anyway he was feeling frisky or something last night and apparently got a little careless…

“Yeah, P,” he said ready to launch into something. Some kind of story. “Spend all that time in the desert and you never even go see the Grand Canyon,” he said.

“What? I’ve been to the Grand Canyon,” I said. “Matter of fact I have flown all around inside it on a date! What the hell are you talking about, I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon. Yeah, babe! I went there on a date… on a blind date on a plane and not only that some Special Forces guy was there too. How could I forget,” I said with a snort. “Better yet how could you forget,” I said with a stare. “You’ve heard that story.”

The soldier and I watched the war movie over the weekend, nothing like hearing the blow by blow from someone who was there. “What were you thinking here?” I could ask this kind of stuff and get an answer. Plus he’s so candid. He does not give me the pc version but the real version and by the time the movie ended I was somewhat stunned and I was very freakishly humbled.

Now this might sound like I am some sort of arrogant over-inflated freak but if it does, I don’t think you get my meaning. Of course that right there might serve as more evidence of my arrogance so some of you can see I am damned if I do, and damned if I don’t but I feel like doing… offering this, so I am going to.

“Oh, P, you’re not going to get murdered,” the soldier said dismissively when I told him of my conclusions.

“Don’t know.  Would not be surprised if I am,” I said. “I’m the type. And what am I going to do? I can’t stop it. I am not a trained killer, I am a mere girl.”

“Well your boyfriend is a trained killer.”

“Yeah, but you’ll be a work.”

“Well if you do get killed a whole bunch of them are going to follow you immediately.  You’ll be dead and then 25 of them will be dead very soon there after.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. You’ll go plunk and then here come a whole bunch right after you, plunk, plunk, plunk. Whole bunch be dropping in right behind you. ‘Bout 25 of ‘em. Yep, all kinds of dead people following you, P. Body after body becoming in after you.”

I got the idea I might want to step out of the way to dodge the dead guys, but I didn’t say anything.

“And one of ‘em will say your boyfriend made me watch all your videos before he blew my head off!”

P roared.  This is a fun night for us around here.

1) Why won’t he fly?

I think you are sort of new around here. The soldier was in Special Forces for many years. He has (well) over 200 jumps into combat but hates flying. He has a fear of heights actually. Being a Taurus and likes to be on the ground.

He loves to fight though. He loves battle in every way shape or form so much he willing to jump out of a plane to be in the middle of one but now that his fighting days are over he’s got no motivation to get on a plane and it is well understood by those who know and love him, if he’s traveling, it’s by car.

Regarding the soldier and his opportunity to speak freely, I’m here with the back story.  Some months ago a friend of the soldier’s called him. A couple he was close to had a son who had decided he wanted to be a ranger and the request was that the soldier talk him out of it.

Now this put the soldier in a quandary.  Turns out this young man’s parents were precisely, exactly the type that would not want their son anywhere near the military. He was a kid with options… education and so forth.  He definitely need not choose to join the armed services and the parents knowing little about the military and being anti-war in general were flipped out to put it mildly.

It has not occurred to me to try to pinpoint the date when the soldier and I met but the information is coming to me on it’s own.  He was Jonestown to clean up the bodies of the mass suicide in November of 1978 and the movie, “Apocalypse Now” which we saw together on it’s opening weekend was released in August of 1979.   We met in between these two events and we’d known each other awhile when the movie came out so Saturn had to at about 10-13 degrees Virgo.

This weekend we attempted to watch Apocalypse Now. We didn’t quite get through it yet but it’s a movie we saw in the theater when it was first released. It is one of my favorite movies of all time for a variety of reasons and I was surprised when the soldier said he had not seen the movie since he saw it with me 30 years ago.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said. “How can that be? All you do is watch war movies. Not a week goes by you don’t watch a war movie.”

“No, I only saw it that once.”

“Did you not like it?”

The soldier and I watched Die Hard last night which believe or not, I had never seen. He stopped the movie repeatedly to explain how technically accurate it was as far as how an operation is actually planned and executed. Specifically familiar with every weapon used in the movie, (and calling himself the Special Forces weapons sergeant of all weapon sergeants) he explained whoever wrote the money had done their homework to the nth degree.

For example Bruce Willis has a beretta in the movie, a gun the soldier does not prefer but he says one of it’s features is an ambidextrous safety. You can use either hand to engage or disengage the safety of the gun and he pointed out how Bruce Willis kept changing hands to highlight this.

Reading over the post about the path I didn’t take and it seems I wrote it in more code than I intended.  I was talking to a pal an hour later and made it a lot plainer to her.

I told her the soldier told me some outrageous tales when we were kids.  They were outrageous but somehow they were (possibly) credible.   They were possibly incredible too but in whatever case there was no way to completely discount him. It was just not possible to say,  oh that will never happen. I couldn’t say, oh he’ll never do that because he was just too serious of mind plus he knew too much and had too many details.

This meant to sign on with him was to commit to a destiny that was daunting and went way beyond Special Forces. Special Forces was just something he felt he had to do but as this story comes together in my mind, I recall he never said he would or wanted to make a career of it. Perhaps he just needed the skills he would pick up there so he could apply them to achieving his real ambition? It is beginning to look this way to me as all the threads are beginning to weave themselves into something recognizable.
