The soldier was on a rant which is a very common thing. I listen to him with half an ear except for when I decide to pay attention. I can’t do this all the time because the rants are so frequent they threaten my coveted good mood if I don’t filter.

He is genius-like if you pay attention which for me is another reason not to because there is only so much I want to learn on a Saturday. But sometimes he pops off with something that utterly fascinates me.

Last night the soldier and I were talking about a theory I’m developing where basically I wonder if the rules that apply to the percentage of alcoholics who get sober apply to other (or even all) problems and pathologies and anything else you might imagine.

Rather than call me crazy, he said I might be on to something and he mentioned the natural logarithm or the 80/20 rule. I might go into this if I can find verification of a key piece of information. I need to know how many alcoholics get and stay sober for life from a verifiable or reliable source, I am pretty sure the number is abysmally low.

Some of you know the soldier likes math a lot. He has taken every math course that is taught and some years ago started working on his own math… his theory of math. Today I came in from a walk and he announced he’d discovered a phenomenon.

He sat me down and showed me his calculations, he was both giddy and scared. “Too bad this is going to go to waste,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because I’m going to forget it. I’ve got nothing to do with this, I was just figuring these trusses and it came about.”
