The Saturn return of a relationship. It’s been a long time since I wrote about this but I’m bringing it back up because I think it’s symbolic and strikingly so. It’s also a chance to bring some new people further up to speed so they better me and what goes on here.

Most of you know the soldier and I met when we were kids, 17 and 19. We were together on and off for about 3 years but failed to marry for reasons that are complex, heart-wrenching and damned near unfathomable. Whatever those reasons were, this is they way it played and while the soldier and I got in contact in 2003, we did not get back together physically until Saturn returned to the where it was when we met the first time.

I spoke with, Ben last night for 3 1/2 hours per our habit. We routinely go a month or two without talking but when we do talk it is depth. I called him to run my recent psych-minded thoughts by him.

I told him about the pledge of allegiance and the gay bath house connection and in the process realized I had done similar intense probing with the soldier. I have quizzed the hell out of him around some of his missions and in fact detailed this to an extent when I wrote about The Thing On The Other Side Of The World That Changed Our Lives.

“Things are going south. Dust storms and there are problems with the helicopters. Caught in a haboob. Did you know about this at the time?”

“No.”

“So you didn’t know something was wrong? There was no talk? You didn’t sense anything?”

“No, there was no talk and no, I didn’t sense anything.”

I was driving back from Albuquerque and my phone rang.

“Are you going to listen to that thing?”

“I hadn’t planned on it. I am less opposed now but there are some things in my way. For example I have some questions to ask you about this. I don’t know what I am going to listen to and I think it would be better for me if I did. For example where are you in this? I don’t know where you go in this story and I would like to know ahead, I think. For example, were you in Iran itself?”

“Yeah, well they came and got me to go on this mission. Speedy too. They got him too and we were both just kids. We were teenagers and they don’t take kids on things like this but in this case they had no choice,” he said.

He explained how their training was not only specialized but cutting edge.

“Yeah, there were very few people who could do the technical stuff Speedy and I knew how to do. It was brand new technology. The technology we were using was months old. It was brand spanking new and very, very few people knew anything about it so they came all the way to the desert to get us. And I wasn’t expecting it at all. You know what I was doing. I was just some one-stripe dumbass. I was a private but here they came and got me one day, said how would you like to go to Iran on a secret mission?”
