Movies, Love and Neptune

Astrology in real life

I heard from one of my oldest friends this morning. She’s slowly coming back into my life, I think. She is truly one of the best women I have ever known in my life and she’s had a rough row over the last 20 years. I have had a rough row myself.

She mailed me today to say she was was going through old pictures with her daughter all day and she came across some of me with my love at the time. She said they made her feel nostalgic and reading her words made me feel the same. A minute later the movie, The Deer Hunter came to mind.

This movie is old and I guess a lot people have not seen it. I mentioned it to satori who loves movies and she’s never seen it so that is my litmus test. Point is, I am sorry to use an obscure reference if this is what this is but there is nothing in the world like this movie.

It stars, Robert Deniro, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken in their young 20’s. Their performances are all jaw-dropping as is the movie. The guy who plays, “Fredo” in the Godfather is also in the movie but anyway, all these people are friends. They are true friends and the movie takes this snapshot of their lives at a certain point in time right before…

Right before all this shit happens in Vietnam.

I think our lives played like this movie and I don’t know that we’re unique. I do know if you are happy right now, and if you are young, you should take a picture because you might need it some day to remember yourself.

There is no end to what can happen over the course of someone’s life but I can tell you this: Love does not die. I loved, Kathleen when we were young and I still do. I don’t care what kind of barnacles she has hanging off her and I don’t care about my barnacles either. We were good women back then and guess what? We still are.

that is the sweetest thing, Elsa!! I love that movie….it captures friendships of all kinds…between men and between women and relationships in general and how the war changed each of their lives, that photo she found of you is very important and I am so glad she let you know she had found it!! It obviously captures a point in your lives that she was witness to….you don’t have to tell her about it and it confirms the same feelings you had of that time. simply beautiful!!

“The Deer Hunter” is historical, powerful and disturbing - well worth watching again. It’s really fun to see these amazing actors at the beginning of their careers.

LOVE “Bagdad Cafe”! When Elsa mentioned it a bit ago, I could hear the music even though it’s been YEARS since I saw it last. Memorable characters.

This is me at Kathleen’s house (which used to be Henry’s house) back in the day.

I am wearing her husband’s boots. He would not let me ride barefoot.

Ha ha ha. I am a barefoot desert person.

That black tube in the back is ventilation for Henry’s underground house. And you guys think I make this stuff up!

I also see the glass on the wall (rum and coke) and the wall itself is not visible but it was Henry’s jumping wall.

That is it was a patio wall and there was a gate but we were not to use it. We (including Henry when he was 80 and me when I was 7) were to put our hand on top the wall and swing our legs over and land in the patio to stay in condition. Henry felt if he did this every day, he’d be able to do it when we was 100, unfortunately he died.

Fortunately though, Kathleen moved in. She fixed the house up, she is a Libra. :-)

A friend and I used to watch that movie when I was about 17-18. That Chopin scene - wow.

I’m glad you and your friend are reconnecting. :)

Need to watch this movie. I avoided Vietnam movies for a looong time because I had friends & school mates killed over there. Plus the men I dated who came back with serious emotional problems & addictions.

Well, for newbies, be warned it is a very violent movie but none of it is gratuitous. There is no movie like it on this planet and every time I see it, I see more.

There is a timing to how the story is told that I think is remarkable and probably not obvious the first time you see it so I mention for first time viewers. You just have to trust the directer (Michael Cimino won an Oscar). This movie also won best picture that year. It is just a showstopper anyway you turn it.

Deer Hunter…this movie is a mover and a shaker. It seems to catch a moment of time (and so, it appeals as well as disturbs…)

I saw this movie in 1979 and cried so much afterward, my date took me home. I’ve seen it a few times since. It really packs a punch.

I love the theme song! This summer this old movie was once again shown. They do lot of re-runs on summer over here.

There is a young Robert DeNiro in the movie as well - and as I recall the movie ends up revolving around him as a survivor of all these things that happen. It is violent - but it is also a very good movie. I saw it when I was 17 and have never forgotten it.

I tried to see it when I was 15 and it was the only time I was ever carded at the movies and told no. I think I’ll have to watch it now.
