I have been writing about the economy on and off, I am fervently interested in it particularly the black market. I have started adding “donate” buttons to the beginner posts and kashmiri remarked on them - she approved.
“i really like the donate option at the end of the beginners’ posts. that was a great decision, me thinks.”
I responded:
thanks kash, it’s got to be done. I make $3-4 a day off the ads on this site. It just doesn’t cut it, I’ve got a family.
I do consultations and teach the classes - I do everything I can. I work all day and all night but people are going to have to support the writing on this site or it’s not going to be here… which is at it should be because we’re coming the end of the era of entitlement and that’s just all there is to it.
And I want to add this (my thoughts behind the scenes) since I have been writing about all the places going out of business around here:
As for the remark about ‘entitlement”, people in my town forgot to shop at “Wolf Camera” which was an institution when I moved to Denver, 15 years ago and last week they closed their store.
I (on my blog) am trying to be H-Mart, the Asian grocery which stocks what people want and need and gives good value.
People like me are going to keep them in business. We won’t don’t want to lose that store in this town. If we do we’re stuck with Wal*mart and they don’t stock banana leaves! They don’t sell a pound of garlic cleaned and peeled for a dollar. They don’t carry 20 different kinds of squash!
But as good as H-Mart is, they cannot stay in business unless people shop there because the margin is just too slim.
This blog is in the same situation. I really appreciate my clients, the people who pay for my classes , the people who tip or have made it a habit to shop on Amazon via the link.
It is this blog that fuels the Astro Dispatch and supports the other astrology blogs. I am still responsible for 45% of the traffic over there… google only send 10% and the next highest person sends 2%. Can you see how if this one goes down, others will follow?
Again, I am doing everything I can. I feel about this how I feel about all my relationships. I always give everything I have. I always try my hardest and this way if they fail I don’t have to feel bad about it.
I start about 4:30 AM and I am quitting now, it is 9:40 PM. I do this 7 days a week so that’s pretty intense commitment and after that it’s up to the fates.

Is there any way to charge for a membership? I want to tip and have and use the Amazon, but sometimes I am so busy focusing on reading and writing that I without meaning to, forget. Maybe the tip jar should be bigger or more obvious. For instance, right below your new posts, before people start to comment because you have to scroll down to see the tip jar and for a while I just thought that was another ad…..just throwing out some thoughts…..
denamaria, thanks. I think if people begin to grok this as a reality they will get in the habit of putting something in that tip jar. It’s a mindset. It’s a decision you have to make to support something.
I am generally ahead of the curve but I am certain the loss of things we take for granted offline that are disappearing will eventually occur on the internet.
If you pay attention, you can see things changing online. More ads on youtube for example. People are trying to stay in business and so am I.
The fact is this blog is completely unique and I am certain it would be sorely missed for a number of reasons. But I am a faithful person and I do see this as no different than a relationship with a man.
I try to sustain my relationships but if the other person (or in this case people) do not value the thing, it will come apart as this is a law of nature. I’ve got almost 10 years in here but I sure as hell can’t go another 10 without people pitching in. If you think about it, you can see the sense in what I am saying.
Also, the idea someone else will pop up and feel the void is also probably erroneous. It’s like my beloved H-Mart. They are in business but starting a business like they have would be very difficult. I have written for a decade to build this community. It just can’t be done overnight.
Anyway, I am not hanging by a thread or anything and even if I was I wouldn’t tell you. This is as much a routine blog about the trends in the collective as it is personal to me. It’s so simple:
If you don’t shop the store will close and when it is closed it is going to stay closed. In other words, you can’t say “whoops” and have these businesses reopen their doors.
This blog (and the dispatch) is very important to the astrology blogging community at large. There may be 350 astrology blogs but just go take a look at the Dispatch and you will see that a good percentage of the post are either written by me or added manually by me, plus I host the site. Take that energy out of the equation and then what?
I don’t know why more of the bloggers don’t support me as it is the single most important thing that can do (outside of write well) to help themselves.
There is an old bicycling movie out there, they use a phrase (in French I think) that translates to “Get it up and keep it up.”
This is exactly what I am trying to do. This is up, I will try to keep it that way but I am just one little gerbil here and that bears remembering.
Thank you for the information. I have no idea how things work on the internet….shows you how naive I am to this. Obviously, any business needs customers to keep going….I am happy to support you because I think this is a wonderful site and don’t want to see it go…..you do a terrific job!
I order a lot of books off of Amazon, I hope that’s contributing a little bit on my part. If I was making my own money, I’d def be contributing more. I almost feel like I don’t deserve to read/comment here.
Everything everyone can do helps. Every little bit. I think all this takes is a change in the mindset and it is a change that is going to inevitably come anyway.
I support H Mart by shopping there and by telling people I shop there. Matter of fact, I have been meaning to write about this - I see two businesses in my town that I think will surive, regardless. Two business models that work.
One of them is H-Mart and I am just like them. I am cagey and cutting edge, providing a service you can’t get anywhere else. People have rallied around H-Mart, you can see it. We are going to shop there, damnit!
The advantage they have over me is people are not used to paying for things on the internet but you have to grok this:
I am not backed by Ebay or venture capital and anything of the like. I am completely on my own with whatever I can drum up. I am a true “little guy” and it may be that people like me are not going to be able to survive but like I said… you can compare this to H-Mart and Walmart. This is NOT generic content. It is content that teaches and entertains and provokes emotion. The reason is ME and if you haven’t noticed I am unique.
Who else is going to write 10,000 posts for no pay, hmm? And better yet, the posts don’t suck.
I really am THE canary in the coal mine in this genre. I don’t care how that sounds if you think about it you’ll see that it is true.
And last, to explain or support my canary in a coal mine analogy I base that on the fact I have almost 10 years of good will built up. That is, I have produced good content with tremendous heart for almost a decade so if people will not support me, how is a start up supposed do any better? How are they going to replicate that? How many people can sustain an effort like this in the first place?
As to the value of this blog, I have had a least 100 people email me over the years to tell me I have saved their life in some way shape or form. That may not be a big deal if I were a published author who had sold a zillion books but I am not.
For the last six years I have been a single mother with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills to pay so whatever this blog is, it is apparently something.
I think these mails are nice, I appreciate them but they obviously don’t pay my bills and I wonder about that sometimes.
The person who has their life changed or save thinks nothing of tipping the waitress $10 for serving dinner but it does not occur to tip me. Well I have served a lot more than dinner, I’d say.
8 years X 365 is roughly 3000 days of writing. If I put up just 3 posts a day (conservative) that is 10,000. 10,000 posts and no tip.
I hope people can see this is a bad habit that ought to be broken. Virtually everyone can do something to help out. Post a link or whatever. Support the damn thing. Support me, I don’t know what else I can say.
Elsa,
I used to love reading Eric Francis’ Planet Waves horoscopes and I recently discovered he’s gone the way of the paid-for horoscopes.
The tides are changing out there, and the age of entitlement is coming to an end.
Well said!
alicia, I have also moved to paid content, my classes are not free. I do hope to keep this free-for-all going though and this is what I would like people to consider supporting.
Elsa, I’m looking at exactly the same thing with my low carb site, which has been around since 1999. I resurrected it from the dead and people tell me they appreciate it to no end, which I am glad for. But appreciation doesn’t pay for the bills. Ad revenue has nosedived, and I don’t know how I can both keep it free and keep it going. So I’m scrambling trying to learn more techniques to keep the traffic up and earn more income from the work.
