Pluto In Capricorn: The Stimulus Package And The Shadow Side Of Business

March 19th, 2009 @ 4:02 pm by Elsa

Astrology in real life

By now you know I’ve got my eye on the growing black market. This news came to me, it’s separate but related I guess you could say.

Included in the stimulus package is incentive for a specific industry to hire new workers. To be eligible for the government money the business has to hire someone new and employ them for 90 days.

The stimulus will also pay to train the person so they are gearing up for this as well and while it appears this is an on ramp to employment it is anything but.

Those in the industry are gearing up to hire as many people as they can. The idea is to keep them for 90 days, collect the $1500 payment from the government and then fire them. The other idea is to do this as many times as possible… get as many bodies in and out and collect as many $1500 checks as they can.

The people who get these jobs and then lose them will be eligible for unemployment… the government (taxpayer) will pay for that too of course.

How do you feel about this?

i’d wondered if this would also make it more likely existing workers get fired to make way for workers with payments attached. all around, sounds like a crazy stew of unintended consequences.

yes, goddess, that is exactly what is happening. Steady jobs are being lost so that the stim money can be gained.

The fired workers will go on unemployment of course… and work on the black market.

LOL then after a while politicians will be just outraged <> that this revolving door system is happening!

Just like they were this week about the AIG bonuses - which are included in the stimulus package that Congress pushed through without reading LOL.

The companies are the problem as all they care about is money, not even their products. The company I work for, I’ve been with for eight years now, and really I wouldn’t recommend our product to anyone. They’ve made changes to put the product out faster, but in consequence have lost the quality even though in their pledge it says the quality matters. It doesn’t, not really. It’s always about money. Everyone’s out to make that fast buck to the “american dream.” This problem will probably never solve itself.

I have not heard this interpretation but then again, I didn’t get my dose of FOX news today.

Loonsounds, this is not an interpretation. It is someone I knows exact business plan and I don’t watch Fox News… I don’t watch TV, period.

Surely they won’t be allowed to sack people after 90 days? What about making them hire them for at least a year or maybe 2 if they want to receive the subsidy? I really do think government intervention is the way only to go, but it should be sustainable. And also, there should be a plea for responsible entrepreneuring: that is- taking your responsibility as a company for the state of the economy, and NOT saddling the tax payers/ someone else with the burden. There is no way a crisis such as this will be solved if people do not take responsibility, and are only in for the quick buck. That’s what started the problems in the first place….

Ambidee - exactly what I wrote is exactly what it is and exactly what they are going to do. It is completely legal, they will be complying with the law to the letter. This is a large (publicly held) company and they plan to be rolling in $1500 checks - period.

It’s a poor business plan to hire / fire people on the 90-day revolving-door system, although I can see it happening. For many (if not most) industries, once you get past the lowest non-skilled jobs, it would cost more to keep retraining people and dealing with the inevitable loss in time, money, mistakes, and morale. Not to mention that after a bit, people would be very hesitant to work for a company that has huge turnover (although in this economy, many will find work wherever they can get it, and a couple of months of work beats no paycheck at all).

“Churn and burn” has never been a good business plan for a company that actually wants to succeed.

Elsa
Elsa

Carielle, it’s a large company (very healthy - they actually have no debt which is unheard of these days). They are forming a small company to suck in this stim money. It will not adversely affect their business at all.

I think the fact that the stimulus package was rushed pellmell through the political system already in place, and having many corrupt elected officials (Republican and Democratic) with direct input, the package has some gigantic loopholes built in.

Disregarding whatever political party one sides with, Obama had a damned if you do or damned if you don’t situation to deal with regarding the speed deadline he was under, so there are also going to be a lot that was not laid out language wise in preparation for slimeballs to take advantage of.

The unscrupulous will always find ways and means to take advantage of any wording overlooked, and considering what I have seen of some of these elected officials.. is it any surprise that the corrupt are going to capitalize on the misfortunes of the majority?

The immoral/amoral will always try and keep the status quo or strive to strengthen the system they already have profited by. I am so hoping that Pluto in Cap will break this corruption down to the ground and something more sane and fair will be the result.

I’m with you, Daemoness: “I am so hoping that Pluto in Cap will break this corruption down to the ground . . .”

Starting with Abramoff, I’ve been watching the fall of one house of cards after another, and seeing the accuracy in the astrology that Elsa gave us about it last year. I also see the truth in what she’s saying about the vultures and how they will pick the stim package’s bones clean. And I’m going to add that we should also watch how huge contracts, made possible by the stimulus package, go from the federal agencies to the same big companies who have been feeding at the federal trough all along. These guys have been shopping their ready-made contract proposals on Capitol Hill for months already, to make sure they ‘get’ while the getting’s good.

Oh, they’ll make sure enough trickles down to the taxpayers so that it looks good on paper, but you can rest assured that corporate America will be the biggest beneficiary of the stimulus money. I have a lot of respect and admiration for Obama, but I don’t see how the administration can keep all the jackals away from the feed. Too much cronyism and corruption w/in the corporate culture that pervades the federal agencies. Remember the scandal at Dept. of Interior and the Minerals Management Office personnel, who were making sure they got some perks from the oil companies they were supposed to be regulating, and who ‘tweaked’ the federal bid contracting process so they could funnel million-dollar contracts to retired friends and cronies? I see it happen all the time in my line of work, the federal contracting process is so cut-throat. But I would like to hear more about how the black market will be reflected in all of this, as I don’t know much about it . . .

But hope springs eternal, and we’ve got a new emphasis on change and discipline, and maybe something will jar loose.

Happy Spring Equinox, everybody!

I am looking everywhere for a source on this - it is not on the news ANYWHERE so it must be coming from right wing talk radio. Frankly, I think it is bizarre and absurd political slam on Obama and his stimulus plan. As far as I am concerned, it has no basis in reality whatsoever.

Elsa, I left the blog during the elections because I told you I can’t stay on a poltical blog that is dissing my party and my president. You wrote me an e-mail asking why I left and I said “politics” and you wrote me back that you don’t do politics on your blog. Well, this is politics.

You don’t even give a source just “someone you know.” Please, I could go to the Rush Limblog if I had any interest in hearing non-specific non-referenced criticisms on my party and my president.

Elsa, I am leaving this blog because of politics. I will never be back. Please refund my course money that I paid you.

I do not think you are a bad person and I have nothing against you as a person. I just do not want to read right wing politics on an astrology blog.

Thank you for this time we have shared on this blog, Elsa. I have enjoyed it except for the politics. I wish you and your family all the best.

God Bless America!

Loonsounds - my source is someone I know personally - this blog is about the SHADOW SIDE of Business (which I am very interested in) not politics (which I am not interested in).

You are bringing politics into this and I don’t know why.

haha Dorothy that video is great. I added their documentary movie to my netflix.

I think I started the comments heading down the politics road - sorry. I have 9th house / sag and always see that facet of something.

(And I have to say I don’t see any politics of any kind inherently in Elsa’s post.)

You don’t have to go far to ‘research’ all of those unhappy with the unintended consequences of Obama or the stimulus plan. Just turn on CSPAN for crying out loud.

it’s a blog - it’s gonna be editorial. If you want to fact check and have sources, maybe you should read the NY Times — oh wait, poor example.

I think it must have been a little more than 5 minutes ago that there was strong support from this blogging community in the way that Elsa protects it’s participants from trolling. I am not a political animal but I feel a damn sight better knowing my opinions and confidence are not trashed and higher motives are in play. Which I have to add were observed in the background and only revealed because it was such an altruistic thing to do. Benevolence wins my heart every time!

No offense intended toward Loonsounds or anyone else, but I’ve noticed many people are very touchy about the big O. (Not Oprah)

To many people he seems to represent all of the hope they’ve been saving up since the 2000 election. Most people have very strong opinions about him. I haven’t made up my mind yet.

But this economic “crisis” is relevant to everyone and everything and it can’t be avoided without a huuuuge amount of censorship. It’s intertwined with absolutely everything.

Well, I’m gonna miss Loon, but I didn’t see anything political in the post. I read it simply as big business taking advantage of the stimulus, without mention of where you stand politically. Unfortunate that she read it that way.

I understand Loon’s sensitivity. And I appreciate Elsa’s parsing of the fine point - shadow sides versus political bias. Each is acting with integrity and respect. *sigh* These ain’t easy times are they?

Isn’t there some sort of lengthy process over there that employers have to go through if they want to fire somebody? Over here, it’s almost impossible to fire somebody… even if they deserve it. Verbal warnings, written warnings, opportunity for the employee to correct bad behaviour, followed by more verbal warnings and written warnings… rinse and repeat.

pluto in cap i think will show govn’t corruption to be at an all time, never seen, ulgy high- were headed back to Rome people… this will be interesting when we wake up from this neptune dream we seem to collectivly be having… i feel like i need to take a crazy pill every morning, in order to keep it level with the collective hysteria, economic confusion, and ultimate inertia.

I wonder what the sky says about the collective teaching we seem to be receiving at the moment that you can lie, cheat and steal, and then get a huge bailout with a personal bonus? This thread is interesting because it seems to say that the ‘little’ people are now learning how to gain from this behavior too. All you hear is, “Where’s my stimulus?”

No accountability… reminiscent of Lord of the Flies… Is this how Pluto in Capricorn works? Is there a complete breakdown before a stable structure is re-established to show the need for one?

Well this is funny… Here’s a headline from today’s front page of my local Sunday paper: “Obama looks to control executive pay, expose shadowy trades.”

Oh my goodness. I feel like I may have contributed to the political ‘feel’ of this thread, though I meant my comments to be strictly about the wide-spread corruption I have seen in the federal contracting (DOI)and lobbying process (Abramhoff), and not directed at a particular party or president. I was also trying, in my blundering, newbie way, to express my hope that the Pluto in Cap influence would help us to expose and rid ourselves of what seems to me to be wide-spread corruption.

I’m sad that Loonsounds has left us; I liked her crazy sense of humor and enjoyed her comments always.

I like talking about the shadow side of business and I am sure that while many people are scared/uncomfortable/upset/irritated talking about it now, they perhaps always will be.
In another way, there will be people who are empowered by talking about it. There will people who will be buoyed by it. And of course there are the bunker-builders…they’ve been with humanity as long as the movers and shakers have been.
Like that old expression goes, denial is not a river in Egypt.
