Is 2012 the End Of The World? Yeah, Right. Call Me Jaded But I’ll Believe It When I See It

Astrology in Real Life

elsa desertI’ve got a lot of Capricorn in my chart and consequently I was exposed to more than my share of “old men” when I was a “kid”. And these old men told me all kinds of things all of which turned out to be correct as far as I can recall.

And what’s funny is a lot of them were drunk. I worked in an old man’s bar when I was 19 so many of the old men I talked to were drunker than snot but they still turned out to be completely correct. They’d been around the block, that was all there was to it and by this time, I’ve been around the block myself. So I am in effect an old man and I am telling you the world is not going to end in 2012 and I’ll tell you how I know this.

I know this because the world was going to end when I was a kid. Not once but several times. Four or five times the world was going to end but this one time it was really, really, for sure going to end and in case you had any doubt, you could read the warnings from the billboards on the highways in the town where I grew up because they were there. THE END OF THE WORLD, OKAY? IT’S COMING!!!!!!!!!

And being 8 years old you might imagine I’d have been scared but I was not. Because by the time I was 8, I’d already seen way too much of life and I was more than willing to leave. I was willing to die, I would gladly die so I looked on this as an opportunity to escape.

So the day came and as I recall some people were going to be lifted up before the thing happened. Before the earth turned into a fire ball or whatever… not many , but maybe 3 or 4 were going to be lifted up and I wanted to be one of them, if possible. For the adventure, see?

I mean think about it. It’s the end of the world. Do you want to burn up or do you want to go flying into the sky? There’s no question. So I got up early that day and I went outside… way outside into the open.

Now I grew up in the desert so it was all “open” but I didn’t know that. And having Capricorn, I am innately cautious so I made sure the path from me to the sky was completely unobstructed. I didn’t sit under a tree for example. I had this figured out.

So I went outside and stood there and waited to lifted and… nothing. Filled with faith, I waited some more and some more and some more and… nothing.

I started to feel sad but I kept myself standing there… nothing. Eventually, legs tired, I sat down in the dirt and still… nothing.

As the day progressed, my posture slumped. I wound up with my head in my hands, and by the end of the day I was near tears as reality began to dawn, I was not getting out of this life. God what a gyp!

I stayed outside the whole day with no water, the hot desert sun burning my skin. Would I want to be inside getting a drink of water when the sky shuttle arrived? Of course not.

Eventually I was called inside to make dinner for my family. I could not believe it. I was counting on this thing and I could not believe I’d been tricked. I swear it was one of the saddest days of my life so you know what?

You all prepare for the end of the world if you wish, but me? Been there, done that.

What about you?

Different cultures like to think the world is going to end, and I dont know why. Its odd.

I do, hope, and dream that the world will change for the better in 2012 or thereabouts. I have my doubts though.

My decision (after many years in a religion that taught the imminent end of the world) is to plan as though the world will go on forever but live like the world is ending tomorrow - which works no matter what your thoughts are on life after life since if you believe you will go to heaven or hell and the world may end tomorrow you will behave accordingly and if you believe life is in the here and now and when you’re dead you’re dead, you will also behave accordingly. Thus I try to keep my relationships in a state that, if that person were to go tomorrow, I would not have regrets over things said or unsaid. I budget my money so I can stay above water but don’t deny myself life’s little luxuries either. I try to always give more than I receive, which - honestly - seems to bring more in return (I was taught you can never out-give God, and that’s true). I work hard and play hard and have a nice balanced life. I’m as prepared as someone can be or the end - should it come. If the world ends in 2012 - well, none of us will have a choice, will we?

I think the world as we know it might end, something new might happen.

I don’t get it. What’s going to happen in 2012?

I think that 2012 will come and go for us just as the other doom-laden dates throughout history have done. But each one of us wakes every single day to the very slight chance that it will be our last, either as individuals or as a race. Dates in 2012 will be no different, life’s always a gamble, it always has been, always will be. For me, it’s as simple as that.

I have Libra, but I have to admit that on this score, I’ll believe it when I see it too.

Life as we know it will completely change in the next 10 years. I am in doubt it will end. We are survivors and we know what we have to do. Heal the planet. With pluto going into cap we should all be able to take responsibility and make it happen.

Piya, there will be a transit of pluto (destruction, transformation) in capricorn (society) square uranus (sudden unexpected) in aries (violence?) = destruction of society through war ?? uranus in aries can bring new war technology. Lot’s of other possible interpretations.
People are wondering what could happen.Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound fun. Also the Mayan calender ends in 2012, and I’ve heard other people around the world are prophetizing about the earth axis changing and the distribuition of the water on the planet changing. But who knows. I’ve seen my share of doom day’s too.
The pluto-uranus square will last around 4 years I think.

The world dies every goddamn day. If only we’d be so fortunate that *poof* it’s gone, like a bad dream on Days of Our Lives.

I like Kathy’s approach, and I agree with Liz. Pluto in Cap is going to be an awesome wake up. It will bring endings for people not living authentically and people who cannot adapt.

In spite of the dramatic predictions, my suspicion is we will have the usual hot spots with most people going about their daily lives as usual… Consider that Katrina had/continues to have a huge impact on the lives of many people but there are still millions whose lives are essentially unaffected. Also consider that trauma & drama makes good press . . . and yes, I’m damn cynical when it comes to the Press. Too much Scorpio, I guess! ;-)

I voted for Libra.

It’s funny, I remember adults talking about the end of the world too when I was a kid, but I didn’t believe them one word. I don’t believe them now either. They say it’s based on the old Mayan calendar… my book of Ephemeris goes until 2050, and it’s pretty old too :)

every heartbeat brings you into a new world, in the death of the old.
so the libra answer only sort of fits, but it seems the only reasonable answer to this kind of question ;)

The other day some of my co-workers were all abuzz about the end of the world. Seems someone watched an entire series on the History Channel about the Mayan Calendar coming to an end, blah blah. You should have seen the anxiety being ratcheted up when there was a discussion about this.

I do not believe the world will end. I do believe we’re in for a hell of a ride, but really, when has this ever NOT been the case?

What does the soldier have to say about this, Elsa? I’m curious.

maureen, he thinks anyone who thinks the world is ending in 2012 is a “moron”.

He thinks the mayans calculated the calendar as far as they did… way out, thought that was plenty. “They didn’t count on people in the future being so stupid as to think the world was ending just because they were tired of calculating…”

i saw part of a special on 2012 a few days ago, and they were looking at astrological/astronomical reasons why the world was going to end in 2012… one being that the sun/earth/galactic center was going to line up on december 21st.

i checked the date. there’s no exact conjunction of the sun and the GC on the 21st of december for… another hundred years as least. beyond that, the sun and GC conjunct every year, so what the hey?

beyond that, the astrology of the day is kind of boring.

Elsa, exactly. I always think, well, do soldiers worry about the end of the world when they’re in the thick of the action, battle, what have you? No, they just do their jobs. Isn’t that what we’re all asked to do? As a matter of fact, if you’re worried about this kind of thing, is there an astrological solution? Feed your mars, for example? Huh.

Who knows….
I think the coincidence is that Nostradumus also noted 2012, like the Mayans did.
I like Liz’s response. It’s so true.
Either way, I’m still <3<3<3-ing Pulto in Capricorn.
Oh yeah, and I have also thought as the soldier has. So the Mayans ended their calendar in 2012, so what? Why do we read too much into things? If we get wiped out and a new human race begins, they’ll discover an old piece of gum under a rock and presume all kinds of things about it. Plaster for our buildings maybe? Ceremonial wedding gift? Costume jewelry?

Anyone who reads the bible and believes it’s the word of GOD , KNOWS we won’t know when it will end. As far as the Mayans I agree with the soldiers assesment.

Maybe by 2012 the world as we know it will have ended…..? For our survival, we will have to adopt different values, ways of consuming, energy souces, etc? But do I think, kaput we are all gone - uh, no.

Remember when the planets lined up in 1982? I was in high school and I remember my science teacher laughing his ass off at all the doomsday hype.

Civilizations sure have come and gone throughout history though.

You Capricornies are so funny. Cancer-city here. And I’m not sure how many of these various cultures actually said “end of the world.” I agree with Dorothy. The Mayans actually said “end of a cycle, beginning of a new one”. I have feeling that most of the others said something similar. TV shows and networks want to tell you that it will be the end of the world ’cause it gets you glued to the tube.

Besides, change has to come to usher in the Age of Aquarius… leave behind the old Picean ways… please… I’m drowning… :P

I don’t know what the answer is, but how could someone prepare for something like that anyway? I suppose the thing would be to practice more spirituality, but, ideally, I should be doing that all the time anyway given that this world could end for me at any moment.

The 2012 thing, it is certainly not something I worry about.

Sort of off topic. But I was watching a show on the Dust Storms in the thirties, Black Sunday. That would have made me believe that the world was ending. It didn’t though, well I suppose for some it did.

I think it would be neat to see how the world ends, but I don’t think it’s going to end this early.

I had no idea Capricorns were natural skeptics :-)

As a scientist, I can confidently say that there is absolutely no evidence of a 2012 catastrophe. I’d also argue that most “prophecy” surrounding 2012 is horribly misplaced, where a few unscrupulous authors use the “what if?” scenario to scare people (to part with their money). I’ve seen them use archaeological, astrological and astronomical “evidence” manipulated to support their scaremongering tactics. I’m able to fight off the astronomical misinformation, but it is great to see reputable astrologers taking them on too.

Be sure to keep up the great work, we’ll have our work cut out in the coming 4 years!

Best wishes, Ian

PS. I have a growing number of articles on the Universe Today website, plus on my own space science blog (linked above) for more detail ;-)
