Mercury In Astrology: Conversations With Siblings
Astrology in real life
The first time I spoke on the phone with the soldier after 25 years, I was taken aback by his (southern) accent. He had this profound twang and when I heard it I burst out laughing. He asked if I did not remember his accent and I did remember his accent it was just nowhere near as pronounced which made sense once I had time to think about it.
It’s because when I met the soldier he’s not been living in the south, he’d been living out of the country and had lost his accent to an extent. But here’s the thing, it’s like a phenomena.
With his mother in the hospital, the soldier in on the phone with his sibs (Mercury ruled) and when he talks to them (his brother in particular) he slips into this unbelievable level of twang of which he is completely oblivious.
Now a few days ago he talked to his brother or more aptly described they happily shouted at each other for about an hour. It was impossible to miss, the longer they talked the louder and more twang-y they both got because they talk to loud I could pretty much hear the brother’s end of the conversation from the other room.
And it’s not because I wanted to, it was because the soldier stamped around the house, yelling into the phone and sounding like a different person from a different place and time than I have ever known which is of course the fact when you’re talking about his relationship with his brother.
So they yelled and yelled and yelled. They were in a total frenzy yelling at the top of their lungs and then the soldier got off the phone, totally unaffected and stated calmly with a smile, “Now I have to call my sister…”
I stared at him and just laughed but really I’ve no right. Because if you listened in on my sister and I, it would be total filthy-mouthed, blunt, hardcore, hard-edged in your motherfuckin’ face, astrology and if you don’t speak it, well too bad, we can’t help you!
What do you speak with your Siblings? Where is your Mercury?

Welcome, Bew.
The soldier has one of those too, he calls it his “hayseed routine” and he uses it when he wants people to think he is stupid. ![]()
Heh. One of the reasons why I loved being with my Dad when he was with his siblings. Their regional dialect in Scotland is impossible to comprehend to many people (even other Scottish people). Understanding it is one of the little things that make me feel closer to my family.
i speak nothing with my siblings. mostly because they wrote me off when i was 19 and never bothered to recheck. (i blame saturn in pisces).
I speak new yawk with mine, I now live in the NW and they call me a hick, but the accent is pretty flat over here. But my Brooklyn comes back with a vengeance once I’m on the phone with them. The way you described the soldier’s convo’s with his sibs reminded me so much of mine. Merc conjunct Mars (neptune, sun, mc) in Sag in the 9th.
My SO says I get ten times twangier when I talk to my dad. *lol* Not so much with my sister, we have a different dynamic apparently.
If I don’t watch out, I’ll start unconsciously mirroring/mimicking someone’s phrasing, pace, and diction in less than an hour. When I travel I start picking up the local accent, at least partially, in a couple of hours. If I stay there for more than two days, that’s it — I’ve gone native. Accent, phrasing, body language, the whole works, especially in public.
Mercury in Leo/2nd conjunct Sun, conjunct Saturn out-of-sign in Virgo/3rd, trined Neptune.
i’m not quite sure.
mercury’s in the ninth. opposite uranus in the third.
we’re weirdos… and heavy geeks…
and, i guess, a touch of philosopher, too…
When I talk with my brother(I have just the one), I go pidgin to the max. We are island folks, born and bred to speak the language of the plantation when Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Hawaiians mixed things and it comes out PIDGIN. When I live away from Hawaii the lilt edges out and when I was first translated away I had the greatest fear I would not remember how to speak it. Nah, it lives in the cells and the lips just wrap itself around it like a spoon in ice cream.
P.S. I realize I have injected myself into your blog nation without introduction and don’t know if but I might have missed the protocol. I’m infant to blogging. I’m Mokihana, born in the Hawaiian Nation, transplant to Washington state at the moment, and grateful to be here.
Where’s my Mercury? In the 10th house with Scorpio/Sun.
Where’s my
Nah, Mokihana, we’re not that formal around here. Some places have “introductory” threads, but mostly we just let it all hang out. ![]()
Welcome aboard!
hey there, mokihana– I’m in washington too!
SaDiablo– I also do the mimic thing! sometimes it upsets people: they think I’m making fun. for that reason I try really hard not to do it.
my sister and I seem to fall into some sort of Katherine Hepburnesque accent. seriously. I have no idea why other than pure dramatics. but it’s a strange thing. she’s an actor; I have no excuse.
Tell me about it, satori! Some people get very flustered by it. I also try to curb it if I notice I’m doing it, and if someone gets their back up I just explain as best as I can. What else can you do? *shrug*
I once went on a school trip to Europe, ten countries in two weeks. I had a new accent every other day. *lol* Came home speaking with a Scottish burr that lasted for about a day before fading.
PS — Katherine Hepburn is pure awesome with attitude. What other excuse do you need?
With my actual siblings, I don’t say much. They’re out of my generation, and one speaks a different language which I just barely have a concept for. Lots of misunderstandings and gaps going on, there, nevermind the sibling manipulation. Got Neptune in 3rd… The people I grew up with weren’t my siblings.
With the people I grew up with, it’s pointless swearing and making fun of idiots and commenting on weird things, being a randomly flamboyant jerk and probably being an exaggerative, overly critical word-whore. Mercury in 9th, Gemini… My tone and way I word things changes, no accents here.
That’s okay, kash, I thought my SR was horrible until I realized that I hadn’t had it yet.
My SR’s all over but the shoutin’. I’ve got it at 2º so the last approach was in May.
My sister and I, having grown up in Connecticut in the suburbs of NYC, can do a mean Noo Yawk accent and sometimes we do just to crack each other up…I teach Writing & Literature at a satellite community college campus on a military base in the Southeast and so I encounter a wide range of people from all over. When I get several New York Metropolitan area-born and bred folks in my classes, I notice my accent comes out more. It’s a riot. Having lived in the south for the last seven years, I’ve noticed my i’s are getting longer…whyyyyyyyy you ask? I like the sound of the long i…Mercury in Taurus…language is music to me…
My (half) sister and I rarely speak to each other directly about anything. Her Sun is on the Libra/Scorpio cusp and mine is on the first decan of Pisces. My natal mercury in Pisces. My guess is that my Pisces Sun & Mercury presents itself as the protector of ideas and that pretty much equals a tight-lipped communication style about almost everything. From what I’ve read about Scorpio, I will venture to say that keeping ideas under wraps or at least appearing to do so is a Scorpio trait as well.
When I witness my sister talking to other people she comes across as a real authority figure, she always has the upper hand and they seem to really grasp what she says.
It is a strange phenomena because my prominent Sun (9th house) & Mercury (10th) work to tone her Scorpio Sun down ~90% (maybe more) and I feel I am missing A LOT of what she says, who she is.
I have a lot of Virgo in my chart also. I think that the Pisces/Virgo polarity really plays itself out in my personality. I often feel like my expression is thwarted because of my tendency to get all heartbroken over the tiniest things. So, with that playing itself out it is no wonder to me that I can’t handle what/how my Scorpio Sun sister expresses herself.
I think a lot of what she communicates is directed at the inner me (Virgo/minutia) but it takes sooooooooo long for that to reach the outer me and manifest as something tangible again.
Thanks for listening.
Best Regards,
Stephanie

I have lived in the South all my life, but my parents are from the North. I have a Southern accent that I use ‘at will’, much to my husband’s chagrin. But I don’t use it with my family. One of my brothers has adopted an over the top Southern accent that I think he uses as a form of protection (an “I’m just a good ‘ol boy, don’t expect much from me” coat of armor), which he completely drops when he talks to me. My Mercury is in 8th, Aquarius.
