Vidroid And His Quirky Aquarian Friend: Worse, Much Worse
Catch up here - How My Son Became A Man
Vidroid started 3rd grade and when he did, something inside him had shifted like a gear. Whatever gear he had been in before he was now in 5th and he was driven to stay there. I really have never seen anything like it. It was as if he woke up one day and decided he was going to kick ass. HE decided he was going to raise his bar as high, High, HIGH as it could go and this is how he was going to live from now on. From day one of 3rd grade, Vidroid was a model student. (swearing below the break)
He was a model student from the teacher’s perspective and he fared just as well on the playground. This while his home his life crashed down around him. Caught up with my daughter for very good reason, Vid was almost completely neglected by me but still he soared.
He soared at school and he soared as both a brother and a son. The kid did things that are hard to imagine anyone would have the presence of mind to do at any age and it was almost unfathomable to see a child perform in the way that he did.
I saw this and I acknowledged him but it was less than 5% of what he deserved simply because that was all that I had. It’s like a family with a pot full of food but there is not enough to go around. The parent knows the kid is starving. The kid (if they’re like Vidroid) clutches it up.
By the time summer rolled around I was in debt to the tune of more than $30,000. In fact, that much debt was incurred in the space of 2 months, my end of the hospital bills in that time period alone.
Meanwhile my daughter who was supposed to be better, much better was getting worse, much worse. We spent that summer isolated never dreaming the year ahead would be even worse than the one we’d just endured but this is exactly what happened.
If there is such a thing as a horror dial, ours was turned up to 10 and held there for months and months and months and months and now? Now the universe was going to crank that fucker right off the panel.
It was about here I started to lose friends and Vid suffered the same fate. Like when your hair falls out from your cancer treatment, there was just no way to keep up an appearance, we didn’t even try.
To be continued.

Oh man. My heart goes out to Vid.
Dear Elsa,
You and your son are pearls. I don’t know that you like pearls, but from the reads I’ve made here on your pages … maybe. In the Hawaiian language the word for ‘pearl’ is MOMI, and it has come to mean a lot to me. In the darkness of a very ugly looking outer shell, some invasion has taken place and the invasion irritates the hell out of the oyster (who is simply having her life). The wisdom of the oyster comes through and the irritation pushes some hot-wire that envelopes the invasion, over and over again until the sucker is coated tight. The pearl. Incredibly strong (with or without hair), lustrous and valued. I value the pearl in its many shapes not so much so I can string them on a thread and wear them around my neck. More like … I know your story and value you because I’ve lived through a few pearl-makings myself. Malama kou kino (take care of yourself).
Elsa, You are welcome.
Mokihana, that’s lovely. ![]()
