Open Question: Dealing With Transits

Ask the collective

astrobook1.jpgDeirdre Tanton writes:

One thing about being an astrologer is, I see my transits coming. I have a pact with myself to put a helpful spin on the matter; this does not come naturally I admit. I have learned this the hard way — from wasting precious time being unnecessarily scared. Plus it used to be really stylish to write scary astrology books which lacked positive direction. That was just the norm, and that was what I read back then.

In the early 90’s I saw the Capricorn pile-up heading toward my Capricorn stellium all the while Pluto was inching toward my Sagittarius Moon. I was shakin’ in my boots. Little did I know that’s when I would move to Europe, get married and have a baby. Sure, there have been mighty dark parts, but it was my big dream to have a child and time was running out. My dream was going to come true and it did. I could have looked forward with joy and self-assuredness, but I didn’t.

I am thinking about all this because I just booked a trip back to the states for three weeks next month. I will be there for the Full Moon in Capricorn and the Total Eclipse in Leo. I can imagine a spotlight on legacy, my creative self dark to light as well as the resources involved in raising a child. I will creative survival, as Saturn conjuncts my Pluto.

When planets aspect, life goes on anyway. It makes a ton of sense to set up our lives so we can trust them now.

How do you deal with transits when you are out to empower yourself? Do you ever fake being brave and forge ahead?

the more you do it, the less fake it is. because the hard transits can be beautiful. they just tend to be taxing….
(then again, easy transits can put me into overload.)

Interesting topic. Living our best life is really just about cycles, right? So I am left to wonder if each of our journeys are more about our attitudes. For instance, transiting Saturn to natal Pluto can be a postive experience if we are prepared to embrace the impermanance.

  3. Lupa says on 6/29/08 at 9:03 am:

Living consciously with a fairly challenging chart is really hard at times but I wouldn’t have it any other way. When Saturn went through Gemini a few years back it rocked my world and the worst thing about it was that I had all this self judgment. I should have seen it coming ya know? I know more about astrology now and am much kinder to myself these days.

The question is not whether or not you fall when a difficult transit hits. It’s whether you get up again and begin to integrate the latest lessons when the hard times begin to pass.

  4. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 9:56 am:

Thankfully I’ve been oblivious to most of the major transits in my life so far (I know more about them now than in, say, 2003).
For example Pluto conjunct my natal Neptune was definitely one of the more gruesome times of my life, but if I’d been aware of ‘it’ I would have had more fear…
More fear but also a framework within which may have helped me feel less powerless.

  5. Deirdre says on 6/29/08 at 10:00 am:

It’s nice to connect on this with you. I can tell that you get it, so thanks.

wyrdling- beautiful and taxing, I’ll run with that.

Pepper- I am hugging impermanance like a tree and it feels good.

Lupa- oh yeah self judgement man I’m gettin’ weed wacker for that.

  6. Deirdre says on 6/29/08 at 10:04 am:

Hi Kashmiri- just a question, did you change careers when Pluto was conjunct your natal Neptune? Did that have anything to do with the gruesome-ness? Are those two planets challenged in your chart?

Yeah, that framework, thats why it is all worth it. The framework helps me make sense of chaos, plus its intellectually stimulating as a bonus.

  7. Loonsounds says on 6/29/08 at 10:04 am:

Oh yes, one never knows how these very intense looking transits may manifest. It’s all for the better in one way or another, even if it’s linked with suffering. Example, when T. Pluto rolled over my nodal axis, I had a radical hysterctomy where everything went, and, there was pain and discomfort, of course, but my life has been SO MUCH BETTER now, without all the pain I lived with night and day prior to that. I never realized how much pain I was in until it was gone.

Pluto rules my eighth house, and, over my MC, it may mean many things. The first time it rolled over my MC at 28.5 degrees Sag, it brought conclusion in a financial settlement which was hugely to my advantage. Now it is Rx and heading back there again, what is to come? There is such major intensity in the air all the time now, major endings are happening every day. They hurt, but apparently it is time, and life goes on.

And, with Pluto on this parental axis, I do worry about my mother, but I am here for her and do all I can, which is the best I can do. But with these transits, I wouldn’t leave her for the next few months, and that I get from astrology, and for that I am grateful. Astrology helps, not hurts.

There is also very intense family conflict between my mother and sister and in a very shocking ‘upset’ my mother is adapting her will to cut down (or even out) my sister’s portion of her inheritance. All of this is eighth house stuff. Plus, I am an astrologer and I study longevity, death and suicide in the charts, how much more 8th house can you get!

  8. Deirdre says on 6/29/08 at 10:15 am:

Well that’s 8th house if I have ever heard of 8th house. I love how you use the transits around the care of your mom. That really does help. She’s lucky to have you around.

  9. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 10:22 am:

Dierdre: thanks for your curiosity. No I didn’t change careers, but I had a work-related accident (I was hit by a car while I was working as a bicycle messenger). The following 12 months things went from bad to worse. I ended up badly hurt as well as in litigation (which is still ongoing, 5+ years later).
I was dumped inexplicably by 2 of my oldest friends, my aunt died, I had to give my apartment, the shit went on and on for an entire year and then Pluto transited my SO’s natal Mars/Mercury conjunction and he almost died in an accident…yikes. It was super intense but I can look back on that time now (last 2002-late 2003) and see how blessed I was by my desire to come out on top.

Neptune is in a Grand Fire trine in my chart (along with Saturn and Venus/Mars conjunction). It opposes my Gemini Jupiter, sextile Pluto.
Pluto opposes my Venus Mars/Venus conjunction. It squares my 1st House Moon, trines my Jupiter, sextile Saturn as well as Neptune.

  10. Loonsounds says on 6/29/08 at 10:30 am:

Thanks Dierdre, I really appreciate hearing that!

  11. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 11:31 am:

I wonder if you ladies might be able to help me out.

Just before I became aware of my need (this was the build up) to separate from my SO, I started to have a breakdown. It was awful. Anyway, I went to the doctor and he prescribed some anti-depressants for me. I only ended up taking a couple of the pills because it freaked me out too much (the idea of messing with my brain) (hmmm, Scorpio sun, and some Virgo in my chart as well).

I really barely understand the whole transit thing. But I think I might still have a bottle of those pills (should have the date on there, right?). Is there a way to see what was going on with my transits, to see if it matches up with anything? How would I go about it?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  12. Deirdre says on 6/29/08 at 12:03 pm:

Oh, I see, Kashmiri, your chart is so integrated that one thing fires off the next. Yes, the desire to come out on top, this is the stuff we love, the very essence of life.

  13. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 12:09 pm:

Deirdre thanks for using the word ‘integrated.’ I think it will help me a lot, as I sometimes look at my chart and feel tired just trying to see what’s what.

  14. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 12:12 pm:

Snapdragon–how about your Venus, its house, and how it’s aspected?

  15. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 12:14 pm:

Oh, and you can always check on astro.com on their ephermis for the dates. Check the degree of planets of the days in question, compare them to your birthdata and take ‘er from there. (I don’t have astrology software and am assuming you don’t either).

  16. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 12:20 pm:

Ummm, my Venus is in Scorpio in the 8th house along with Mercury, Sun and Neptune (Stellium?). Venus Square Jupiter (think that’s the one that I don’t want to admit to - don’t think it matches me at all!) and trine Ascendant. But what does that tell you in relation to my question?

Where do I go on Astro for that ephemeris?

    Thanks Kashmiri

  17. kashmiri says on 6/29/08 at 12:29 pm:

As for if your transits match up with anything, I’d like at transits involving Neptune (drugs) and Venus (how you love). If you go to astro.com’s homepage, you can look at the menu on the left and click ‘ephemeris.’ Pick your year in question and it opens up as a printable pdf file.

  18. Deirdre says on 6/29/08 at 12:31 pm:

Hi Snapdragon. You will probably find the site astro.com quite interesting. That site has a lot to explore. make two charts one for your birth and one for the taking a couple of pills day. I am sure there is a wealth of information there and you will learn a lot.

  19. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:08 pm:

Thanks Kashmiri and Deirdre, I’ll check those out and see if I can come up with anything. ;o)

  20. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:21 pm:

Deirdre, did you mean put in the date from the pills instead of my birth time?

  21. Jilly says on 6/29/08 at 1:25 pm:

Yes with my Pluto transit I am like “OK bring it on!” which is how I feel but sometimes I’m like “…eek…”

It works better when I am like “OK bring it on!” so I just proceed “OK bring it on!” even though I am in pretend mode sometimes.

  22. Lupa says on 6/29/08 at 1:29 pm:

Snapdragon, I don’t know exactly what Deirdre was suggesting but I know you can enter your information and then go to extended chart selection and choose natal chart + transits. Then instead of leaving the default date for the transits of today, enter the date from the pills. That will give you a chart that shows where things were in the sky then in relation to your birth chart.

  23. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:31 pm:

Lupa, thanks so much! I was just trying things out, hadn’t got anywhere yet. That info sounds perfect, I’ll give it a try now.

  24. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:35 pm:

Oh, oh. Now what do i do with it? How do I read it?

  25. Loonsounds says on 6/29/08 at 1:36 pm:

    LOL snapdragon

  26. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:37 pm:

Loonsounds, quit laughing at me!!!! LOL

  27. Loonsounds says on 6/29/08 at 1:38 pm:

Do you see the planets on the outside of the wheel? Those are the transits. Do you see the planets on the inside of the wheel? That is your chart, I am sure you regognize that.

Look to see if any of the outside planets are on any of your four angles, your Sun, your Moon, or anything else. Then you can do the same thing with progressions and etc.

    Astrodienst is awesome.

    good luck!

  28. Loonsounds says on 6/29/08 at 1:41 pm:

I’m su sorry, snap, I just couldn’t resist. You were just sounding so, uh, blonde! Hee hee

  29. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 1:42 pm:

uh, yeah, i have my moments!

  30. Lupa says on 6/29/08 at 1:53 pm:

You can also look at the little chart on the lower left to read the exact signs and degrees. It should show your natal planets and the transits both.

  31. Snapdragon says on 6/29/08 at 2:08 pm:

Lupa, I see that, but I’m not sure what the numbers mean. Do I read it starting from the absolute left hand side, or just start under the transits?

Also, I see a glyph that I don’t recognize: it’s sort of a square with a line sticking out at each corner - it occurs in two different spots.

  32. Lupa says on 6/29/08 at 2:14 pm:

Ok if the charts on the bottom are more confusing just stick with the big circle. Look at the planets in green on the outer circle and see which natal houses they were in. If you can identify some of those, you can then look at your planets on the inner circle and see if any of them were 1/4 or 1/2 way around the circle which would be difficult aspects generally speaking. Or were there any 1/3 of the way around. Those are trines and are generally beneficial. You probably know that much but start there and see what you see.

  33. skye says on 6/30/08 at 8:25 am:

I feel wyrdling wrote it best - “beautiful just taxing”

Pluto has been all over my poor ole Mars in late Sag but I really do love the how the worst possible things can be the best things that ever happen but I am after all a scorpio so i like crisis haha.

I knew when Saturn was going to move into Virgo it wouldnt be too long til it was conjuncting my Dc and I couldnt wait. I know Saturn on the DC can be seen as a difficult tranist but I couldnt have been happier to get it out of my 6th house. I just keep thinking this maybe the tranist to bring on the start of new stable loyal relationship. And what do you know I met a guy recently with a Virgo Venus/Mars conjunction also having the same Saturn transit. I have a bit of crush now. Dont you just love astrology.

  34. Snapdragon says on 6/30/08 at 7:25 pm:

Skye,(or anyone else) how do you tell what is happening right now? I mean you just said that Pluto has been on your Mars in Sag lately, but how do I find out what is going on with me? Is that on Astro as well?

PS I’m a Scorpio as well, and even though crisis(es?) suck, they do make you feel more alive, don’t they?

  35. skye says on 7/1/08 at 9:14 am:

Hey SnapDragon I remember you! You have a Scorp Sun in the 8th like me and a Pisces ASC. Yeah crisis(es?) do make you feel more alive dont they.

About finding out if Pluto or any other planet in the sky right now is touching any of your natal chart planets (which is a tranist) is not to hard and yes you can use Astro to find out. Im assuming you have alredy signed up there.

What you do is go the main page. You’ll find on the page a box which says stuff like daily horoscope ect ect click on the link where is says more free horoscopes.

It will take you to another page. On it there should be a list that says Horoscope Chart Drawings click on the link that says Extended Chart Selection.

That will take you to page where you can select different things. There should be Title that says Methods with a drop down box where you select different charts such as partner charts. Pick the one that says natal chart and transits. Then click to show the chart.

A chart should come up that shows you natal chart (with all your planets inside the chart) but on the outside of the chart in green it will show where the planets are now. You can see if any of those green planets are touching/going over any planets in your natal chart.

Eg saturn ( the green one outside the wheel) should be near the outside of your 6th house about to pass your 7th house or about to go across your DC in Virgo soon like me since we are both Pis ASC.

For me my natal mars is late Sag and Pluto in the sky is in late sag so on my chart the Green Pluto on the outside of my chart is on top of (conjuncting) my natal mars inside my chart.

Does that make sense on how to read the chart better. Sorry if that confuses you more

  36. Snapdragon says on 7/1/08 at 10:16 am:

Thanks a lot Skye! Yes, what you said about Saturn is correct, but also Mars is right behind. Uranus seems to be right over top of my Saturn and Chiron in Pisces.

Do you consider anything at the DC, MC, IC or AC? And only at the points?

  37. spinner says on 7/1/08 at 2:34 pm:

Thanks Skye!- I am going to check this out too.

  38. spinner says on 7/1/08 at 3:06 pm:

OK- So Pluto is transiting my midheaven, sag, 10th house cusp. That should be a lot of fun, right?

  39. Loonsounds says on 7/1/08 at 3:52 pm:

(Loonsounds buts in to the discussion)

Most definately, Snap, to the first question, and I am not quite sure what you mean by points.

Skye, I have the same configuration, Pisces rising with Saturn coming up to the DC, and Spinner, I, too, have Pluto t my MH sag on the cusp.

‘Should be a lot of fun.’ hmmmmm, ’should be a lot of fun.’ I don’t know you too well, but I would guess that you are being sarcastic?

  40. Snapdragon says on 7/1/08 at 4:00 pm:

    Loonsounds, I guess probably angles?

  41. spinner says on 7/1/08 at 4:08 pm:

Loonsounds- it seems to be working ok for me. Now that I look more closely, this is a past event and it looks like pluto retrograde will not travel back far enough to transit over me again. It has been intense but things are going well. I was throwing that out there with a touch of sarcasm for sure, but I learn a lot by hanging out here on Elsa’s blog from you and many of the others. Thanks for your input and all the best to you!

  42. Gem says on 7/2/08 at 9:10 am:

I’ve had pluto transiting back and forth over my venus/jupiter axis both at 29 degrees in sag/gem so have been freaking out for what two years now? And it is inching back on me and pulling up more fears. I am pushing confidence to the fore as best I can but there are dark moments in there too. It puts me on edge and I have not been relaxed in years.
