trading-soaces.jpgToday I did something inordinately weird, I watched a TV show with the soldier.  I don’t remember the last time I watched a TV show but I can tell you it’s been years.  We watched “Trading Spaces”.

Now I have never seen the show before but assume it is the same each week. A young couple was fighting to they were to decorate a room in the other person’s place to see if they were or could be compatible?  I don’t know… it was something like that but anyway the man had a female roommate who clearly did not want the relationships on the rocks to recover and I pointed this out to the soldier.

He was pretty fascinated with my interpretation of things so he continued to ask me questions and eventually I just kept up a running commentary that sounded like this:

“Yes, well the redhead roommate wants the boy.  She says, I don’t think the girl is right for him but what she means is, I don’t think she is right for him… he should have someone more like me. She’s got custody of that guy and she is not giving it up!”

“Oh my God, that is ugly,” I said as the decorator helped the girl paint white characters in Hebrew onto a black background. “But look!  The design matches the shirt she is wearing.” I stopped to laugh out loud. “See that? She did all that work to come up with that design and actually it’s the same thing she has on her shirt and I bet she doesn’t even know it.”

And then the man was doing his design for the girl, with roommate helping…

hebrew.jpg“Now look at that. Look what they come up with.  See the red in the middle of the design? That is the girlfriend.. that red is the same color as her hair, did you notice?” I roared.  “It’’s the exact same color. What they did is made a picture of the relationship all right. The whole thing is scratchy and harsh and there is the redhead right there in the middle where she is and where she is damned, damned going to stay.”

He came back with this:

“I can’t believe what you can make of this.  Want to know what I do when I go into a situation?”

“Tell me.”

“Well the first thing I do is access, threat or no threat. If there is a threat, I either take out the threat or I leave. If no threat, then nothing. I am a person with purpose in my life. I know what I am doing at all times and I don’t like to deviate from it. I am with the people I want to be with and there is little else I care about or even think about.”

“I see.”

“Yeah so if there is a threat, then I deal with it and if not - If the people are nice and if they are friendly then I will be friends with them but it will be very superficial.  I am on a course, see. So even if someone is nice, I am not apt to head towards them and merge in some kind of way. I am staying on my track…”

I have an emphasis on the 8th house (what is subconscious) and Neptune-type sensitivity to pick up on the nuance. In contrast the soldier is very fixed. I thought this was fascinating and wonder..

If plunked down in an environment, how do you function?

I’m very Saturnine, so I have a highly pronounced public/private dichotomy. When plunked down into a given environment, I just go into veneer mode. My 5th house Stellium makes sure everyone is entertained. However, Scorpio rising conjunct Neptune does like to secretly read the room for hidden motivations.

I would hate for anyone to redecorate my environment. I have a negative reaction when people even rearrange my environment. it feels like a personal incursion. I go two ways with the plunked down thing– either totally open, being myself, or totally veneer, fakey nice, ready to flee if things turn on me.

First thing I do? Look for the fire exits. Then I decide if I’m going to be super-outgoing-nice or hide out for a little while and let things play themselves out before I give any input. If I found fire exits, it’s usually the outgoing bit.

First I make sure I’m okay. If I’m not I start making for the door. I figure I can always come back (unless its one of those rare times when I think I can’t come back in which case I measure my discomfort against how interesting an experience it is likely to be) . .

If I’m okay, I check the other players (Who thinks they’re running this show? Weaknesses? Who can kick my ass?), and then I begin to strategize (who do I want to be my friend? who do I think might be a threat?).

I can tell things like that about people too, Elsa, and to me it’s so obvious that I just can’t understand how other people don’t notice it too. My husband used to think I imagined these things, and he still does sometimes, but he is starting to respect my track record of being right about these things.

I do a quick scan, deduce the environment/surroundings and figure out what kind of people they are and adjust myself based on those instincts. I’ll try to find some common ground and make them feel at ease, but it’s all fairly superficial unless we can get over the small talk and down to the meat and potatoes. I’ll zoom in on the most interesting person in the room and try to draw out their innermost secrets.

*lol @ Shannon*

My response is pretty varied, but the most common is to clam up and watch the interactions until I figure out if I’m compatible with the vibe or not. I so, I hang it out there and if not I go all Libra-veneer.

get my bearings. observe for awhile. act eventually, unless necessity provokes a quicker response.
