Is This A Controversial Astrology Blog?

Ask the collective

controversy.jpgNow I hope this isn’t a stupid question.

Someone just told me my blog was “controversial” and I think he was referring to something beyond the current conflicts and debate around ethics in astrology that arose over Claire-France’s blogs on the DC Madam, here and here.

Now in my mind this type interaction is rare on this blog so let me ask you this:

Is this a controversial astrology blog?

Better yet if you had to define (Saturn) my work or my writing (Virgo), what words would you use?

Thanks.

Yes I think this blog has controversial areas Elsa. There is nothing wrong about being controversial, its quite stimulating and thought provoking. Thats ok isn’t it? If you are bringing up a subject that provokes thought and comment on the blog you are being controversial. If you are inviting readers to investigate how you see a particular astro function works and how that impacts on their thoughts and feelings that is controversial in a general sense. Keep up the good work.

Well, no I don’t think it is controversial…I wouldn’t use that word, but I really like the dialogue in general.

I think there can be a lot of projection in the comments section, which is what I thought of when I read those two posts. I was offended that a reader could make a statement about not using the astrological services of you or your friend cf perez.
Perhaps some readers fail to see that by reading your blog they ARE employing your services. Some pay for it by donating and some do not.
But you are teaching all of us, so thanks a lot. I’m especially sensitive to this because my 1st House Moon: projection really disturbs me, so I’m highly conscious of it. And trying to learn detachment.

And, am I super stupid, or is a discussion of this sort controversy? Or the fact you posted your friend’s article? I feel like I’m missing something (wouldn’t be the first time).

In the vaguest of senses. People sometimes disagree with you, and you tend to be blunt and direct. Mushmouthedness would be the only possible solution.

Better yet if you had to define (Saturn) my work or my writing (Virgo), what words would you use?

    Confessional. (And blunt and earthy!)

  5. Elsa says on 5/3/08 at 8:13 pm:

kashmiri - it went in the spam filter and is recovered. Sorry about that!

  6. kashmiri says on 5/3/08 at 9:11 pm:

no problem–better to have one than not! my own email spam filter seems to have become less effective since Saturn entered Virgo. Waaaay more penis enlargement ads than ever before!

  7. Loonsounds says on 5/3/08 at 10:47 pm:

I have a feeling that the use of the word controversial did not come out the way he meant it. I’ll bet the message he was trying to convey was that on your blog you freely discuss taboo topics: sex, death, whatever, stuff like that.

Whether or not it is proper and/or a good idea to bring up certain topics/to discuss them/to allow them to be discussed/and in how much detail, and so on and so forth, this, in and of itself, is surely controversial amongst some circles of people.

Some people (too many) want to set their own moralistic agenda on the world, (it’s also known as censorship), while other people have the appropriate ethical considerations in play, but they are not interested in setting moral agendas or in censoring a free flow of creative, timely and thoughtful discussion.

Yes, I believe that he is referring to your selection of topics rather than the general flavor of the mix and match of contributions which come in on the blog.

So it’s not as if the people who contribute go around having controversies amongst themselves. I think people here are very reasonable and they do reflect a fairly sophisticated level of communication skill similar to your own. I see a cross range of views from a variety of spectrums, social, psychological, metaphysical, political, and so forth, which is a very good thing.

How to define your communication/writing style (Mercury)? It is lively, stimulating, cogent, reasonably objective, non-judgmental, clear, sophisticated, very highly entertaining, and, in my view, quite professional. How to define your work, Saturn? I would describe it as an interactive creative process, very unique and cutting edge, resulting in a product apparently so valuable that people would even try to steal pieces of it.

Is it technically correct to call you blog a ‘controversial blog?’ I guess only if it is in the middle of some discussion being held by the control freak blog police of the world, or something like that.

I think it depends very much on individual perspective… along the same lines as you can’t please all people all of the time.. (and how exhausting it would be to try!)

People generally often see what they want to see… personally I don’t find this blog controversial.. but I suppose it depends a lot on your individual life experience and how open you are to ‘things’

  9. Deirdre says on 5/4/08 at 12:54 am:

I find the environment here inspiring.

  10. Strawberry Fields says on 5/4/08 at 4:30 am:

    Your astrology: meaty and accessible.

  11. dreamsAreality says on 5/4/08 at 5:00 am:

In your face truthful. GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

  12. A. says on 5/4/08 at 6:42 am:

Controversial isn’t the word i would use to describe your blog or your writing…. Some words i would use to describe your blog…

    probing
    insightful
    genuine

And there is a strong sense of community here. Despite that, there are always dissenters or trolls or whatever, every blog has them. You may have your share because you share light (and dark). People who share light always attract… angry people? Jealous people? Confused people?

You share your world here, parts of it anyway…. without pretense.

  13. s says on 5/4/08 at 6:46 am:

Entertaining, informative, easily digestible, and REAL. And the persona you’ve created–brilliant. Is that the “controversial” part? If so, I could understand the comment. Otherwise, there are plenty of other blogs talking about the dark and gritty side of life, so what’s the problem? Maybe that astrology should always provide sunshine and daisies?

The most interesting astrology blogs out there don’t do that. There’s absolutely a place for the detached, clinician-therapist approach, but you’ve created an intriguing personality for us to respond to as well. Art-ifice and information –brilliant.

    And, yes, perhaps, controversial. ;-)

  14. Strawberry Fields says on 5/4/08 at 7:28 am:

    Your writing: distinct and recognizable.

I could pick your pieces out of a line up with no hesitation. I don’t think I can say the same for any other astrologer.

    The Elsa stamp is unmistakable.

There is no other even remotely resembling it/you.

  15. wyrdling says on 5/4/08 at 7:31 am:

controversy? i dunno, you don’t seem to go for the pushing people’s buttons for the heck of it thing.
but you don’t mince words about what you think. *shrug*

  16. Amber says on 5/4/08 at 7:42 am:

I’d say unconventional rather than controversial. And it’s also very alive. Your writing moves with your life, which is compelling.

  17. Lis says on 5/4/08 at 7:58 am:

“Controversial” meaning that you say things or give advice that people don’t want to hear? You don’t sugar coat anything, and that’s why I keep coming back. My Mercury’s in Virgo, after all (trine a Capricorn MC). Earth signs don’t appreciate bullshit. ;)

  18. shell says on 5/4/08 at 8:14 am:

Just the fact that advice and perspective is given from an astrological standpoint is what some people might consider controversial, maybe? Some people think it’s the devil’s workings.

Controversial or not, I looove it here. It’s honest, straight-forward, interesting, and it’s nice to hear an array of perspectives.

People commit suicide everyday, people have affairs, people have addictions, people are lost. What is controversial about that? It’s life.

  19. Amethyst says on 5/4/08 at 10:08 am:

    A. is right, Elsa. It’s not controversy, it’s just real.

  20. Shaina says on 5/4/08 at 11:24 am:

Controversial? Nahh. Provocative, certainly. Confessional is a good word (borrowing from Max here), but more in a social neighbor-over-the-fence way.

And we’re lucky to have this forum! I consider it one of my little extended families in life, and you, Elsa, make it possible. Thank you!

  21. Ana says on 5/4/08 at 11:48 am:

lol, controversial? perhaps. Provocative? yes. But that’s the best part, that’s why I like to come here. Your style is refreshing and different and everyone can share their thoughts with you! It strikes me as a blend of genuine feeling and depth (pluto) with progressive ideas and original thinking (uranus). I would say your blog is illuminating. I read it everyday and always come back for more! Thank you for your excellent work.

  22. eva says on 5/4/08 at 11:15 pm:

    :). It’s a Talk Show.

  23. Claire-France Perez says on 5/5/08 at 10:13 am:

It’s a confessional, but human. We are all a bit controversial when we let off our persona masks. Those who shy away from controversy are unable to locate their own inner conflicts, and want one-sidedness to prevail… but even a sidewalk must crack, and up come those little weeds and dandelions… a controversial bunch!

    Keep cracking them up, Elsa!

  24. goddess says on 5/5/08 at 11:46 am:

provocative is the word i usually use when describing your writing. it’s also very honest and oftentimes raw and/or edgey. you write without evidence of a self-conciousness that often gets in the wayof people expressing themselves.

someone weighted with lots of “pc” type attitudes would possibly find it controversial. i don’t, because i see beauty in the pure expression of an individual’s truth, whether or not i share the perspective.

and while i’ve always enjoyed reading your stuff, i do have to say that your writing has improved over the last few years-specifically since you did the book work. i would say HQ’s Virgo influences helped you hone in what others could track without losing your voice.

  25. Elsa says on 5/5/08 at 11:49 am:

goddess - yes, he helped me enormously - thanks for noticing. That was a Saturn transit through the 6th house (writing) and this transit of Saturn through Virgo should further help, I imagine…

  26. SaDiablo says on 5/22/08 at 3:54 pm:

Late to the party, as usual. :D

I have to agree, I don’t find your writing controversial. It’s more like a gathering of long-time friends whose conversations go where they will, respectfully, but without mincing around the tough subjects. (My Libra begs me to add that some find exactly that controversial! But I tend to stay away from those people because we have nothing to talk about and I get the same sense from the others that comment here.)

I would call your writing real, grounded, honest, and, at times, inspirational.
