Pleasure Amidst In The Chaos - And What Would You Grab If Your House Was Burning Down?

Ask the collective

house-on-fire.jpgWe’ve got a grand trine in earth now so pleasure is on offer amidst the challenge…

Several years ago someone asked me what I would grab if my house was on fire and I thought a minute and then said, nothing. Fact is I would grab my pictures if I could but there are too many of them, I would not be able to get to them and get to them all so I would just walk out and let it all burn to the ground. You know. If you want it, God, then take it.

Because if I were to grab something, whatever it might be would feel stupid in my hand once outside. What? Your house is burning down and you’ve got a what in your hand? I just think it would feel ridiculous to be holding something but to my great shock, a couple months I realized I did have something I would grab in a fire.

Now I am not supposed to tell you about this so I will tell you very little but I would grab the soldier’s dog tags. Remember his dog tags...”

Well I am attached to them and I am not allowed to say why but I would definitely grab them so that is that. And then today I was going to another meeting and was so negatively affected by the meeting on Monday… well I was taking care. And when I looked over and saw the dog tags I realized they really give me a wonderful feeling so I decided to take them with me. I called the soldier on the way:

dog tags“I’m good. I decided to take your dog tags with me. I have them.”

“You’re what?”

“Taking these dog tags, I said. I feel really good when I hold them in my hand.”

“Yeah? Well I like them too. I like the aerodynamics of them,” he said.

“What?”

“Well they’re flat and they’re light. So when you throw them at me they do less damage then when you threw that ring at me. This is a much better deal.”

I didn’t bother to answer.

If your house was burning down, what would you grab?

heh, I’ve already HAD my house burn down on me. couldn’t grab anything, and that’s ok by me. at this point, the only thing I’d grab would be my kids! Nothing else really matters…

I’ve lieved what you’re talking about. Not a fire, but there was a time when I had to walk away from absolutely everything that I couldn’t carry (which consisted mostly of my toddler and his clothing). My mom could never understand how I could just walk away from everything, but it was more than necessary at the time.

I actually really love my fireproof safe (it’s a small one) that holds my important documents… because it’s a place where I can plan to put stuff that I would want to grab in such a situation.

Unfortunately, I don’t keep anything knick-knacky or jewelry in there, because in order to enjoy that stuff, it needs to be out where I can get at it. Hmmmph. :)

I’d grab my laptop, which at least has most of my writing on it… and my phone because I’m very practical about stuff like that — need a phone in order to make plans and contact the insurance company and let my mom know I’m not dead.

And then I’d cry. A LOT. Because I LOVE ALL OF MY STUFF. A LOT.

I am CRAZY afraid of losing pictures in a fire. That’s why I keep them all in a concentrated spot, so I can (hopefully) grab and go.

I keep telling myself to get a fire-proof safe to put all my albums in, but unfortunately I forget everytime since I have milk, eggs, and other sundries on my mind.

It’s so easy to forget the little things about your kids when they were babies, pictures always remind me. I swear I can even smell the smell of them as babies when I look at them.

I already have been burned in a kitchen fire, skin graft and all, on my right arm. I would take another just to save my pictures.

Oh and my Chihuahua, Mr. Poe Poe.

Shell, you remind me how lucky I am… any pictures I have that are not digital, my mom and sis have copies of at their homes.

You might want to go to Kinkos and invest in scanning all those pics in and keeping them in storage online somewhere.

i have venus in taurus. i don’t like this question :( heh.

cd cases of all my computer/writing/art stuff and a rare album sitting next to them. i imagine there would be a different instinct response if i didn’t have any kind of warning. my first concern would probably be if my pets were okay.

  11. ewinbee says on 4/16/08 at 6:33 pm:

june, I’ve got Venus in Taurus too, and I didn’t like it either. :) I just spent several minutes looking around my apartment with my eyes welling up.

  12. Elsa says on 4/16/08 at 6:37 pm:

Your guys are funny. I live with Taurus and their crap is everywhere. The soldier has a sweater I gave him 30 years ago. He says he still wears it from time to time. “I always liked that sweater” :-)

  13. Jennifer says on 4/16/08 at 6:47 pm:

    Laptop. And I’m a Taurus.

I’ve had my apartment flooded, so I was glad the flood did not open up above the laptop!

  14. ewinbee says on 4/16/08 at 7:08 pm:

But it’s a perfectly good sweater! *giggle*

  15. Elsa says on 4/16/08 at 7:19 pm:

ewinbee - another ex of mine (Taurus) had slippers that were 30 years old when I met him. I was stunned (and somewhat disgusted) but you know. I like a man with some quirk.

  16. max says on 4/16/08 at 7:37 pm:

I already have it set up. The four folders of various kinds of CD/DVD backups, and if I have time, the two removable drawers of personal stuff, and the server. Cats and dogs go out first before anything. 120 seconds tops, depending on how long it takes to herd the cat. Of course, if I have a 120 seconds (an awful long time), I would probably grab the old books and the paving brick from the Hippodrome. The rest I can replace.

But I’ve kept this stuff in mind for a coupla decades; you learn to plan for this stuff when you’re dealing with network security.

Totally would grab the pictures, yes. And maybe my duvet. You know, for snuggly post-fire comfort. A bra?

I have Taurus rising too but I am a recovering “Stuff Junkie” because I have a packed sixth house that must be efficient. Loads of crap is not efficient.

But I’m not nearly as prepared as Max. Dude.

  18. Ana says on 4/16/08 at 9:01 pm:

Nothing. I would leave and never look back. I guess I would consider it freedom! Freedom from pictures, memories, habits, junk, stuff, a life left behind. Freedom to start from scratch however way I like it, take a different path, start fresh :)

Funny you wrote this blog, I had a dream a few weeks ago about this same thing happening to me. In the dream, I’m in the house and everything was in flames. I was on the first floor and my clothes were peeling away until I was naked and light - I was listening to the sound of fire and I slowly drifted up through the top of the house and soared out safe. I was so light, I could just leave everything behind. In the dream, the fire was opportunity to leave, to become new again. The Aries in me loved it.

I wonder how many of us actually get a “start over” card like this in real life? I remember wishing for such a phenomenon many times, but it has only happened twice (the first I wanted, the second I did not). We usually have to put up with circumstances in life for a long time before they ever change. Too bad we don’t get to choose when we want to just throw it all away and start again!

  19. kashmiri says on 4/16/08 at 9:40 pm:

Ana, I’m so with you…though I like nice stuff it feels so fucking cumbersome. And temporary.

I guess I’m the only Taurus in the world who hates having stuff and and just yesterday came *this close* to throwing my laptop out the window and into the alley. A whim. I blame my Pluto/ASC conjunction and Saturn/8th transits as of late.

  20. kashmiri says on 4/16/08 at 9:41 pm:

Oh, and I think you can choose to start something new anytime…I’ve done it, repeatedly (Sun opposed Uranus).

  21. Daemoness says on 4/16/08 at 11:00 pm:

Other than my animals, I can’t really think of anything. I realized that all my pictures are of the past and there is no one that would care to see them in the future. I would miss my books, but those could be replaced. I am a Taurus, Virgo rising and I really am learning to let things go. I have found if I don’t learn to release, they just get ripped away anyway, so I am beginning to accept that.

  22. Lexie says on 4/17/08 at 5:40 am:

I’m a Taurus. My laptop and credit cards and whatnot are always in my ‘purse’ (see: the Wizard of Oz’s Bag), so I’d grab that.

I’d sure miss my blanket, my wooden bull, my DVD’s, my vitamins (they’re expensive!)…hell, I’d probably even miss that can of soup in my cupboard.

  23. Ronda says on 4/17/08 at 9:58 am:

My dog. My purse if I could grab it and still get out, but the only thing that would truly matter to me would be to insure the safety of my puppy dog.

  24. Stephanie says on 4/17/08 at 11:03 am:

Husband and kittehs. Then the laptop if there’s time.

  25. max says on 4/17/08 at 6:55 pm:
