“Yeah sort of,” I said staring at the gun. I don’t remember like you do, I haven’t seen that in a long time.”

“We got it right there in the neighborhood one day for no reason… we had no reason at all. Just decided to go look at guns one day, we weren’t thinking anything. And we got in there and they showed us this one. Smith and Wesson. Gun like this cost $3-400 but we only paid, $189, remember? Because it has a flaw. There is some little flaw on the handle here somewhere,” he said, turning the gun over in his hands to find it.

“Give it to me,” I said. I took the gun, flipped it over and showed him the flaw I first saw nearly 30 years ago. “There. It’s right there.”

“Yep, that’s it. They showed us that and you know how we are. We’re Italians! We have mustaches. We have moles! Give us that gun, we said. Give it here, we’ll take it!”

I laughed.

“What the hell do we care about some flaw on the grip. Yeah, we bought that gun and left that place and you said, I know somewhere we can go shoot it and next thing you know we were out at Rancho Diablo shooting the hell out of everything we could find or trying to. Remember, P? You were throwin’ up cans I was shooting’ them, bam, bam, bam! Didn’t hit a damned thing!”

I snorted.

“Yeah, we were completely crazy but boy we had ourselves some fun. And I have kept this gun my whole life. P’s gun… this is me and P’s gun. I took it into combat a few times,” he said. “But only at night because it reflects the light. See? Nickel plated. Can’t use it unless it’s dark but I did use it.”

He elaborated but he didn’t need to, I already knew what he meant.
