Choosing A Role Model… Pluto In Capricorn

Ask the collective

helen thomasLast night I was talking to a friend about aging, another topic that is going to come to the front big time with Pluto in Capricorn. And about 5 years ago I was in the worst shape of my life. I looked absolutely horrible. It was appalling and never mind why, I decided I’d better get to the gym and get myself together or else.

So I went to the gym and after the initial shock (the first day I almost vomited when I got off a treadmill, the room was spinning), I took the time to look around at the other women there, specifically the women who were older and I noticed something.

I noticed some of the women were very healthy, others looked as if their doctor told them they better get to the gym or they were going to die. It looked like an either/or situation to me and I decided on the spot to emulate the healthy ones. In other words, I chose a role model and this has worked for me.

So here’s the conversation from last night:

“Older women?” I said. “Of all the older women on the planet, I’ll tell you who I wouldn’t mind ending up like.”

“Who?”

“Helen Thomas. She’s a singular human being,” I explained. “She can do what she wants, say what she wants, wear what she wants. Never mind what she looks like, she just does her job. And when she’s gone, that’s it. Big void in the room because she’s so real. I think it’s an accomplishment.

My friend said she’d been in some movies. “She plays herself.”

“Yeah I know. If I could turn out like Helen Thomas or anything close to it I would be deeply satisfied and consider myself a complete success at this life. Ever look at Helen Thomas? Can you imagine what she knows? She knows more than where to get the best botox. I’m telling you, she is my idea of a totally successful life and all she does is live.”

Do you have a role model?

(Helen Thomas, a Leo with Venus in Leo and a Scorpio Mars… Aries Moon, I think)

At this point in life I see my role model in Sopia Loren. Have you seen her? She’s still feminine and beautiful. That may not be everything, but at her age it’s certainly an accomplishment. I have her cookbook.

Oh, I forgot for a moment there because I haven’t had my coffee yet today, but I’ve always thought Georgia O’Keefe is amazing. Have you seen portraits of her as an older woman? She’s beautiful in her own distinct way.

Hands down: Louise Bourgeois. 96 years old and she’s still making art that makes people stop, look, and listen.
She’s a Capricorn with her Moon in Aqaurius, Mercury in Capricorn, Venus in Scorpio and Mars/Saturn in Taurus.

Her sculptures were the first pieces of art I *ever* felt emotionally moved by, and was grateful for it. To quote the words from her sculpture ‘Precious Liquids’:
Art is a Guaranty of Sanity

    Words to live by!

Thanks so much for this story, Elsa! I’m in really bad shape and have to get myself to start exercising. It makes me feel better to hear that it wasn’t easy for you to get on the treadmill either when you started. I usually look at the people who are gym regulars and get intimidated out of my mind at how they are galloping on whatever exercise equipment there is. I remember you talked about how you are when exercising, I got the idea that you get into it and god help anybody who distracts you. My father created this very Capricorn workout on the treadmill, basically, steadily rising in speed, peaking and then decreasing, aka a mountain. And you better plow through the whole thing slow and steady or else you won’t get as much benefit so my spazzy creampuff Gemini/Cancer self can’t stop when it’s too much or I get bored and hop on a bunch of other equipment 5 minutes a pop. As to role models, I don’t have one. I usually just get jealous and resentful of people that have their shit together. I think it’s better for me to focus on bettering myself.

i like audrey hepburn for her charm, class and humanitarianism; katherine hepburn for her independance and toughness; and candice bergen for her sophistication and talent.
audrey has taurus sun, pisces moon, aries venus, aquarius rising.
katherine has taurus sun/moon , venus in aries, scorpio rising
candice has taurus sun, virgo moon, gemini venus and capricorn rising

several. depends on which quality i’m trying to emulate. i mean, there’s the ghandi/martin luther king/nelson madela thing and then there’s old ladies like maron woodman who just radiates spirit and childlike wonder along with wisdom, and what i know of isadora duncan and martha graham for making their own rules and letting their truth come out of them and then there’s thomas jefferson and john adams for writing the declaration of independence (a stunning piece of revolutionary writing, i keep imagining what people would say abotu someone saying those things nowadays) and i want more strong female role models but i don’t see enough so a lot of them come out of stories, particularly science fiction. and the faint echoes of history, like queen boudiccea (even though she lost) and the valkyries and amazons and whatnot.

and i adore aung san suu kyii but usually people say “who?” when i mention her. maybe not so much now that burma’s actually kinda’ in the news.
    and isabel allende
and mother theresa (not that i’m catholic, but that doesn’t mean i can’t appreciate her depths of compassion…)
    alice walker
    maya angelou

ok, so there’s more than i realized when i first started asking this question. because i could go on….

…and my father’s mother. who is, honestly, for all intents and purposes, my real mother figure. (i get the good gemini/bad gemini dichotomy between the two moms : P though they both have their charms and faults, of course.)

Jane Goodall, and the chick who went to study gorillas in Africa whose name will come to me as soon as I submit this.

It takes independent strength of spirit to champion other species, or anyone who can’t speak for themselves.

    (Diane Foster I think!)

    My (step)mother-in-law! :D Seriously!
Before she married my man’s dad, she was a single mom who hadn’t graduated high school and had just gotten out of an abusive relationship with an addict. The year my man and I started dating, she was finishing up her fellowship to become a neonatalogist.
The woman has chutzpah, even if I don’t want her house-cleaning compulsion. :)

any woman who is not afraid of becoming an elder, i can learn something from.

kashmiri thanks for sharing the link. i especially like the interview when the artist is asked “what makes you feel you’ve had a good day?” and Louise Bourgeois replies “i’ve said everything i wanted to say.”
