Book Review: Midpoints: Identify & Integrate Midpoints Into Horoscope Synthesis by Don McBroom
Outtakes and Various Other Sundries…
We need a good book on midpoints and now we have it. By the time you get to page 20 in Don McBroom’s new book, Midpoints: Identify & Integrate Midpoints Into Horoscope Synthesis, you’ll want to have a chat with him because he has an extraordinary command of his subject. Its obvious McBroom has invested many hours in the study of midpoints and if you’re looking for bang for your astrological book buck I don’t think you can go wrong here.
“Midpoints” is a textbook, make no mistake. Reading this book is akin to attending a specialty class with a competent teacher. A teacher who can make math interesting rather than tedious which to me is a feat.
McBroom has a dozen ways he accomplishes this. For example when he points out the imaginative Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Deepak Chopra, John Lennon, Mozart, and more all have their Sun at the midpoint of Mercury and Neptune you’ve no choice but to become involved. Who do you know with Sun=Mercury/Neptune? Don’t you wonder? I did.
The whole book is rich like that. It gets your attention and compels you to consider midpoints from every angle. As a result you are smarter when you put the book down than you were when you picked it up.
Now I don’t know what else you want when you invest in an astrology book but I would go further to say this text belongs in the library of any serious student of this subject. You just have to expose yourself to all of these things, progressions, return charts and the like and when you’ve got the basics down and are ready for the specialty class, “Midpoints”, hands down this is the book to get.
It’s an excellent job. Congratulations, Don!

“Who do you know with Sun=Mercury/Neptune?”
Sadly, not *I*. Apparently I don’t get to be a creative prodigy genius this time. *Sigh*
Actually, I’ve got Moon/Neptune conjunct my Descendant. I have absolutely NO DOUBT that speaks volumes… And a chuckle–Venus/Jupiter midpoint conjunct my Mars (gosh, could I use that to help me win the lottery??? Or does that just mean I’m never going to keep to a budget?) But what is rather startling to me is that I’ve got no fewer than 4 midpoints conjuncting my North Node. And, not a single midpoint in the entire sign of my South Node. So maybe there is hope for me yet?
Maybe I’d better pick up that book…
Hi Tinkerer,
Well, all is not lost!
With your Descendant = Moon/Neptune, by using the 90-Degree Sort, the Focal Point (the point to the left of the equal sign) is either conjunct, square or in opposition to the midpoint of the two planets or points on the right side of the equation.
This means (since the Ascendant is always exactly opposite the Descendant) that you have the midpoint picture Ascendant = Moon/Neptune. This midpoint picture translates as:
Identity definition and personal projection can be accomplished through meeting emotional needs by idealism, imagination, dreams or fantasy; emotional sensitivity, awareness; perhaps emotional confusion or deception.
Notice that I always try to include both positive and challenging interpretations because astrology doesn’t describe what will be but rather what can be.
The same concept goes for the North and South Node examples that you mention. Because the South Node is always exactly opposite the North Node, any midpoint picture with the South Node as the Focal Point would equate to that same midpoint being associated with the North Node as the Focal Point.
As for the Mars = Venus/Jupiter, I’d suggest this interpretation:
Efficient use of energy can be accomplished through expansive beauty, idealism, harmony, justice, fairness; social conviction or cause; possible overindulgence or excess; too much of a good thing…
Sorry, but even midpoints can’t help us pick the winning lottery numbers!
But seriously, check out midpoints-they can often reveal a depth of interpretation that adds considerable detail to the analysis.
Hope this helps.
Warmly,
Don McBroom
