“I’m bringing you the rest of my book, okay? Because I am sick of avoiding your questions,” I said.

‘You sure do a good job of it though,” he said.

“Of avoiding your questions? Well I have no choice. You made me promise you not to ruin my book for you. You specifically told me not to say anything that would give away the book and detract from your experience of it. Your emotional experience, you said. You went as far as to specify this and then you go asking me questions, trying to make me to break my promise.”

“I’ve released you from that promise. I already said you didn’t have to keep it.”

“You can’t release me from my promise! It’s my promise and I’m not going to break it. I heard you loud and clear when you asked that and I want you to have your undiluted experience. So I just read this and it’s been awhile. And I hate to say it but I think this is going to wreck you. You’ll be moved anyway… to somewhere new which is saying something, I guess. It’s a hell of a claim, considering.”

“Well, P, all your writing impacts me. But what’s in there? I am already 2/3 through that book, what else could it be?”

“The end of the book is not like the beginning. The end is like a different book, but the same. My book is a trick, I’m afraid. The whole thing is a trick and there’s no way you can anticipate it because you’ve not seen anything like it.”

He didn’t answer.

“I used to write like this on my blog but when I got in touch with you in 2003, I quit completely. I just stopped which means you don’t know I can write like this. You haven’t read anything like this out of me and you’re bound to be upset when you do.”

“I wish you’d just tell me what’s in there.”

“Well I won’t. I am not going to mess this up for you because I remember exactly what you said. You were adamant so that’s that. However, the next time I see you I’m going to put this in your hand because I don’t want it to be postponed any longer. I don’t like not being able to answer direct questions when you ask them.”

“You never answer my direct questions,” he said.

“No I don’t but that’s because you extracted that promise. But never mind that. I am bringing this - you can read it and after that we’ll just have to see what happens.”
