Speaking of Giving: The Amazon Wish List and Mars Mercury in the 9th House

Outtakes and Various Other Sundries…

amazon comI started keeping an Amazon Wish List about six months ago. And I think the Amazon Wish List is one of the best ideas ever because it allows people to do nice things for other people. Did you know you can search a person’s name and pull up their wish list? I learned that from a Scorpio Mars.

So anyway, I don’t want much. I think I’m just a born ascetic because the things I value are almost all ethereal. It’s that or just the fact I grew up with nothing, which never bothered me and it still doesn’t. However, occasionally I want a book.

Since I go to the library at least weekly it’s not that often. But now and then I’ll come across something obscure and invariably very specialized that’s not available through the library and these things need to be purchased or procured in some way.

And they’re always pricey of course. You know. It’s a ten or a twenty year old book and only three of them were printed and now I want one of them. ::sighs::

henrySo eventually I will spurge in most cases. But might wait a year or even two, to be completely certain I can’t do without the thing. And I got this from Henry who wrote:

Letter to Fichy May 7 1959

“… My brother is a Presbyterian minister and I went to his services while at his home but the material splendor always seemed to crowd out a real spiritual atmosphere. And as I grow older, my conscience bothers me every time I buy something like a typewriter or a radio. It seems that it might be better to do without these things and give the money to those who need it for the necessities of life. Have you ever felt this way? Actually I think we should acquire only those things that aid us in serving our fellowmen better…”

So anyway, this apple fell very close to that tree. So the only way I am going to spend money on one of these books is if I can determine it will serve the collective.

By that I mean, I have to feel the knowledge I want so badly will be of use to others. And though it’s easier to justify things like this since I started writing this blog, it is still very hard. Because occasionally someone will send me an enormously challenging question and the reason I can answer it is because I have read or talked to someone way out on the fringe.

But if I don’t get this thing… this book I covet, I am going to be able to answer 99% of the questions sent anyway, so you see the pickle!

These days, when I find a book like this, I put it on my wish list and yesterday the mailman surprised me with the little book I have wanted. It’s the second book I’ve asked for and the second book I’ve gotten and if you have never had this experience, let me tell you, there is nothing like having the mailman bring you something you want (Mars - desire, Mercury - mail) when you least expect it.

It feels like God (9th house) putting the thing you want (Mars) in your hands (Mercury). And I think (Mercury) it means something (9th house).

And beyond that it inspires me to act. (Mars). I have to do something now that I got this book and what I have to so is write, of course… (Mercury) and publish what I write (9th house). And do I get pregnant (Mars/sperm) easy or what?

Thanks, Christine.

Have you ever bought someone something off their wish list? How about the reverse?

I have bought many things for many people…things that I knew they wanted but wouldn’t get for themselves. But no one has ever done the same for me.

Sure have. I love the Amazon wish list; I’m not real accurate at picking out things people will like, and with the list I know I’m giving them something they want. :-)

I am a bit scared of starting an amazon wishlist because books are more or less the only thing I really crave. But it would seem too much to have this 10000000 book list which changes every other day. With the danger you will actually receive some too. Instead books are a luxury treat and I order one when I really need one. I have sent many books as presents though Mostly unexpected, because the book made me think of someone. Before I moved country I sent some of my favourite books to friends. I knew I would rebuy these books anyway. No point in carrying them across the entire continent.

The guy who used to host my website had a wish list on Amazon. I ordered him something every year for his birthday. Usually a book about programming. Every year, he was surprised and delighted.

Of course, I love receiving gifts too.

That’s the exact reason I do things like that. I love making people feel special when they don’t expect it because it’s happened to me a few times. I know first hand how it can brighten a crap day. Something so simple.

And it is never about the physical object for me. Just knowing there’s someone thinking of me is amazing in itself.

That is what I wanted to do for you, to give you that tiny lift.
