Let’s Eat - Part 1: Food and Nurture, Sadge Moon Style
Regarding home food, I virtually never serve it. If I am cooking it is invariably for a man and since I am a man’s woman I cook whatever they want to eat. I cook their home food. And if I am eating with a woman, we go out! But my home food is pasta, which was odd because I grew up in the desert and there were no other Italians, anywhere. And I mean, not even one so where I grew up… and when I grew up, no one knew what pasta was.
So when we were kids we learned to say “spaghetti” when we went to school, or better yet, not to bring it up. But then in the early 90’s everything changed. I wrote this blog about it in 2001:
~~~
What happened is ’round about 1992 I woke up to find that pasta was in style. If you are in Italy or New Jersey or New York, then this might not make sense to you but in my part of the world, “pasta” was not even a word. “Spaghettios” was a word for sure. And perhaps “spaghetti”. But if you said “pasta” no one knew what you were talking about so you didn’t say it, you just ate it.
Now imagine my surprise when all of the sudden pasta goes trendy and chic restaurants start charging $25 for a plate of it with a little oil and a mushroom or two.
Surprise turns to shock when people line up to pay this price for 30 cents worth of food. I was really amazed and asked my sister, “Does this mean we are in style?”
“Yes!” she said. “We are in style as a matter of fact.” And she would know because she’s cutting edge in all departments. “Just look at who’s on the runways these days. They are starting to use darker models. They have never put women our color on a runway, but you’re seeing them now. They’re popping up here and there and mark my words, this trend will continue…”
So what happened is just like a sun dried tomato, I was elevated from “peasant” to “exotic tasty morsel”, and this was funny to note if you’re me. And now it’s almost 10 years later and carbs are bad BAD. Just read around. Pasta is bad BAD and so what does this do to my desirability factor, and who do you think is going to ride high next?
~~
That was the end of that and now it’s six years later, 2007, and I think it’s the Asians! I was at Denis’s place…
“Where did you get that?” I asked, pointing at the can of coconut milk, but already having a pretty good idea.
“Har-Mart. Do you go to Har-Mart, Ilsa?”
“I figured. Yes I do go there.” Har Mart is an Asian grocery but it’s huge. The place is enormous, like a big box superstore. “Who doesn’t go there? Is that business to be in or what?” I asked. “That place is always packed.”
“You’re telling me,” he said. “I had to quit going there on weekends. You can’t even move in there. It’s like sardines!”
“Yeah, the parking lot is spilling over at all times.”
“I know it. They have that expedited line,” he said. “You get in it and you only have to wait an hour to check out…”
So there you go. No more pasta, we’re all buying sesame oil now…
What food is trendy where you live?
Organic, free-range, packaged processed ‘health’ food. Oh, and all things soy. Just say no to soy hotdogs. Terrible.
Sushi. You can hardly throw a brick without hitting a sushi restaurant in this town (in south Louisiana, yet).
Organic food and Thai food are what I see most. I can walk to 5 different Thai restaurants (and have tried 4 of them)from my street alone. But, this is Seattle, so it’s not so strange.
I grew up in NY so I get what you mean about the pasta thing. It is my home food, and I am apalled by the prices of it (and the lack of quality) in most restaurants. I never order pasta out when I can make it at home 100x better! (Sag moon)
Well, nothing will ever kill off TX bbq, but asian (especially sushi) & Thai are quite popular here. Don’t know if it’s in vogue or not, but I’m going vegetarian…heh
