Jupiter in Sagittarius - Friends From All Over The Planet

Astrology in Real Life…

gemini on the phoneI don’t have a land line anymore. My home phone is a cell phone which my daughter takes with her on weekends when she goes with my ex.

When I get a call on the weekend, she handles it so deftly people always remark. She’s a Gemini with Jupiter in Sagittarius and she can definitely talk to anyone. She is 11 but she has no problem chatting up my friends. I try to keep her up to speed with my life, and what’s going on with what is essentially her phone.

“There is a new person calling me,” I said. “His name is Denis, he’s from Cameroon.”

“He’s from Cameroon? Cool.”

“Yeah. His number is restricted so when he calls you won’t see his name. It’ll say restricted and you’ll know it’s him. He also has an accent, so that’s another way you’ll know it’s him.”

“Okay.”

“So I just wanted to let you know. If he calls you can give him my other number and you can say hi if you want. Hi Denis from Cameroon. You can say that if you want. You know. He is very easy to talk to. He can handle you. He can handle anything.”

“Mom likes world people,” she said.

“Yes, I do.”

“So do I,” she said. I have a new friend. Her name is “something hard to pronounce”. She’s from Ethiopia.”

“Yeah?”

“And I have lots of friends from Mexico and I have a friend from Israel… I have friends from all over this planet,” she said.

“Good. That’s how to have a good life. That’s why we live here, so you can meet and know people of all kinds and colors…”

We are very fortunate. People of all types live here, the neighborhoods are not segregated at all so the races mix all the time. And I moved here when I was pregnant for this precise reason (to the city named the most integrated in the United States at the time). I wanted my children to grow up with access to as much diversity as possible and I think it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Do you have access to people from other cultures where you live? And if so do people interact, or do they pretty much stay within their racial groups?

we have a very international community here at the uni. and there’s all kinds of clubs for people to socialise and get to know each other. in my department, we had a French gal host a French cheeses party, two of the Chinese students (one christian, one buddhist!) are organising a New Years celebration with traditional food, another gal from Japan who used to brin sushi in all the time, a couple who threw a half Ukrainian/half Scottish dinner party, and there’s talk of organising a great big multicultural potluck dinner… it’s really exciting to be around such diversity.

Moving from Los Angeles to a rural Oregon town was culture-shock in reverse! Things have improved over the past 10 years but still have a long way to go. I was showing houses to a couple from India yesterday and was mesmerized! I love cultural and ethnic diversity!

I think one of the joys of the military community is its diversity. My kids have always interacted with different kids from different ethicities and cultures. I think it’s very beneficial.

*grins* I live in Vancouver, BC, and go to a university where us white kids are a visible minority, and quite enjoy it. If you want to know the truth, being in a place where I look around and see no variation freaks me out.

I moved from a place where there was more diversity to a place where there was very little, mostly white faces. Now I go to a small college where the majority is lower middle class to affluent, mostly white and female, politically in the extreme left, in the extreme left in issues of gender and education, mostly shocked by conservative points of view, has homogeneous style and music choices as well as educational background and a similar degree of artistic eccentricity. A lot of students who look at it from a distanced Holden Caulfield-esque perspective thinking this way, that people are all the same while I thought that talking to so many different people I would notice how different they are. They say there is a problem with racism on campus which I think is far-fetched and true at the same time, mostly because students of color who are conflicted about their identity think they keep to themselves while its only that their close friends come from their restricted group. I don’t know how important diversity is anymore, I think the issue is that the world of the school is too small.
