Comments Redux

Behind the Scenes at ElsaElsa…

natureAll the comments being held in moderation have been posted. I have not spoken with HQ but I thought about all this and I just don’t see policing comments (beyond making sure the people asking questions aren’t attacked) as my role here. It’s my job to create the content which obviously takes tremendous energy and whatever I have left, I figure it belongs to my kids, my man, my friends and myself.

Besides this, I just don’t believe in censorship or tightly controlled anything, so it’s no wonder it did not occur to me to step in on that thread. I figured the discussion would come back up, break through, go over a cliff or whatever, as nature intends. And I am not in the habit of thwarting or trying to control nature! In fact, this was the conversation about this before I got the mail from HQ. I was talking to the AMF:

“They’re fighting on my blog. Two cats. It’s a cat fight,” I said.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. And then a dog showed up,” I laughed.

“What’s a dog? A boy?”

“Yeah. A boy. And then another boy got in there…”

So that’s where I was at. And when that mail came in, I thought, oh crap! Am I supposed to be doing something? ::laughs:: Am I the police? Because if so, I was completely asleep on the job!

I had my advice posts written a week ahead, loaded and ready to go. I had finished my story. I thought I was in done!

So anyway, this is my progress report. I’ll be back later, have a good day.

WTG Elsa…let the fun continue! Reading back, yup, we got personal but I don’t feel it was that insulting. Felt more like we were head on, stuck on a log, rather than fighting.
    Thanks Elsa.

    I like your attitude Elsa.

    Hi Tosh,
I believe one person interpreted your unfriendly personal commentary as an “attack”. Perhaps it was not an attack, but certainly not in good fun. You are correct, we were not fighting, because I did not choose to react combatively to the ‘fighting words’ you chose.

It is a part of life I am familiar with, but can’t say I feel particularly comfortable or attracted to you (or Don). I managed to be civil in response through the application of effort. In your case Tosh, a lot of effort.

    Hi Elsa–

My $.02 here as a longtime public website operator (since late 2001).. whether or not you like it, you are the “Saturn” of your website. I was like you when I started, then the fur started to fly. I realized, as much as I felt all Jupiterian and democratic and “let things work themselves out,” they never did, and I took all the shit for it. And it was a lot of shit. And it degraded the quality of my forum.

I saw the same thing happen on Conjunction. There was someone there with a really abrasive, arrogant personality who seemed to enjoy provoking people. They let the bickering go on for far too long, and lots of people just stopped reading. Because it got ridiculous and boring (much like what’s starting to percolate again, above). Eventually the member was banned from posting.

Sorry, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but let’s face it.. is anyone besides the arguing parties really interested in the argument anymore? I’m all for a healthy debate, but here the arguing is now about the argument, and about personalities. Sheesh. And if there’s a relevant, positive comment to be read, we interested readers have to wade through this pointless, endless drama.

FWIW, that’s my learn-ed opinion. I love your blog and will keep reading regardless of how you proceed.

    love ya,
    Molly

I stay up nights thinking about things I write online. Last night I was up thinking about my statement that people on my forum never worked things out themselves. Often they did. But sometimes they didn’t, and that’s when it got to be a distraction and a waste of everyone’s energy.

It is YOUR blog, so do what you are comfortable with and what you have time for. Frequent readers will learn to “filter”.

A message board I read every day is filled by people of many different backgrounds and lifestyles. There are some people who’s views so deeply clash with mine that I simply skip over their posts (I’m all about conflict avoidance and since I cannot read their comments without replying and getting into an argument, I just ignore them all together). For some, it’s an entertaining debate; to me, it’s too charged with negative energy to dive into.
