Phoenix Rising - Pluto Transit
Hi Elsa,
The last three years have really kicked my butt. I lost my dream job. I almost lost my best friend to diabetes, and I did lose my mother to cancer. Then when I was home alone, I was attacked in my own apartment. I find myself second guessing everything that happens now, both good and bad.
But the last few months, I’ve had this feeling that I’m on the edge of something really big. I can’t really explain it, but it’s almost like I’m in a bubble and I’m just waiting for it to pop. I want to take the leap and step out of my comfort zone, but my second guessing makes me afraid.
Before my mother’s cancer took a turn for the worse, she said I suffered from being a Virgo/Libra “cusper” and that the two signs were pulling on me. But I feel there’s something more happening. Any advice or insight?
Please help!
Tingling Feeling
Dear Feeling,
My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry about your mother and very glad your friend was spared. I am glad you survived the attack, sorry about your job but glad you found another. Can this all be chalked up your Sun being at 29 degrees Virgo, a mere seventeen minutes from Libra? Hell no!
You’re having a massive Pluto transit and when an outer planet hits a chart like yours, profound change is inevitable. And heads up, because you’re nowhere near through the transit yet. You’re not going to escape this intensity until 2009! But that’s okay. You’ll get used to it. In fact, I think you already have to a large extent.
But this transit is much bigger than you even realize. See, you’re finding out you’re unstoppable. As my sister would say, you’re “hard to kill”. You’re uncovering your power through this crisis, which is considerable by any measure. It’s like you keep getting pushed down into your grave and you keep standing back up saying, “I don’t think so”.
And if you do that enough times, after a while people will stop fucking with you. They will come to see that you mean business in this world. You’re not going down!! And once you prove that, everything changes.
You become a person aware of their power, and eventually learn how to direct it. This is the “something big” you’re sensing. It’s your own birth. You are rising out of the ashes like the Phoenix. It’s your own power you’re feeling, literally coursing through your body.
Your “second guessing” is understandable given the circumstances but ultimately it’s going to be trumped by this other thing. The fact is, you want to walk near the fire and the reason is because you can. Look at yourself in the mirror. Just look at yourself so you can remember how you were in 2005. Because you are transforming, and the “you” in that mirror in 2009 is going to be INCREDIBLE.

Hates his Job
Hi Elsa,
I’ve just accepted a promotion at work. But I don’t really like my job any more. I had my own company once, and loved it. To be honest, I haven’t been happy in any job where I haven’t been my own boss
Am I destined to work for others until I retire?
Wondering,
An Employee
Dear Employee,
Astrology doesn’t work like that. You have free will. Sure, you definitely have the chart of someone who wants to be the boss. But what you do about that is up to you.
Are you capable of supervising others? Absolutely! But the fact is, not everyone reaches their potential. The people who do achieve bust their ass to do so… and I’ll include myself as an example.
See, I wrote a book and I think it’s pretty damned good. But I’m in my forties. Do you know how old I was the first time someone told me, “you should write a book”? I was twenty-one. And over the course of the next twenty years, 100 people told me the same. At least!
And you know what my chart says? It says I’m a storyteller. It says I’m a prolific writer with the potential to publish… but did I write a book? Obviously not. I didn’t want to write a book. I wanted to do other things.
Now I’m like everyone else on this planet. I do whatever I want. “I not going to write a book,” I said. “To hell with that! There are enough crappy books out there,” I said while tossing my head back, laughing out loud.
But then guess what happened? I decided I wanted to write a book! And you know what? It almost killed me! It was harrrrrrrrrrrrd! And this is where you are right now.
You are not “destined” to do one thing or the other. You have certain skills and abilities. You have various weaknesses. You’re a born leader, with the aptitude to be the boss. But it won’t happen if you don’t do the work - and on this front, astrology can assist.
It’s during Saturn transits that people clutch it up. If they’re smart, they get their ass in gear and start to do the work. Guess what you’re having?
Riiiight. A Saturn transit. And you see the mountain, right? So you may as well start climbing, because you already know, nothing else will satisfy.
Good luck

Insensitive Gemini
Hi Elsa,
I’m pretty much a typical Gemini: fickle, superficial, a show off, and a bad friend.
I don’t think I have the ability to care about others. There are people around me who care a lot. My parents are like that, and I just don’t love or empathize with them. I don’t care about world events either.
I want to be less selfish… any advice?
Signed,
Gemini Thinker
Dear Thinking,
This is bullshit. Jerry Riopelle sings, “One girl’s a streetwalker, but her feet are so soft…” That’s you, right there. And it’s not your Gemini causing the problems.
I see all these hard angles with the air signs in your chart. You’re detached. You’re jaded. You’re an intellectual. I get it. Let the saps take care of the poor saps! It’s just like you describe… except for on little, iddle, widdle thing here.
You have a stellium in Cancer! You have three planets in Cancer - the goo-goo baby of the zodiac, the softest underbelly there is. You have a Cancer Moon for chrissakes! So what the fuck?
So you have a hard edge. And it’s dynamic enough, it can keep you busy being a detached snob for the rest of your life. But this would be foolish. Because the Cancer in your chart is your strong suit. It’s the best of you. Or at the very least, it’s the rest of you!
Think of an artist who produces some jarring piece of work. A painting. Great. Look at the streaks across the canvas, but where is the subtlety? Where’s the nuance? Where’s the love?
So listen. Don’t ask me how to be emotional. You are emotional. And you are extremely sensitive. You’ve just got to quit rising above your feelings. And I have some other news for you.
With all this Cancer in the sixth house, I don’t think you’re ever going to feel happy and satisfied… unless you find a way to serve with compassion. So here’s the trick: use your intellect to help others. Like the time the battered woman’s shelter wanted me to sell candy bars at a women’s convention for a dollar. I thought it was ridiculous.
“That’s stupid,” I said. “One rich person could write a check for money they’d never even miss and you’d have more money than you’d make selling candy bars all year long. And besides, why are we hitting up women for cash? Don’t you think we ought to get some men involved? Men are going to keep beating their women until other men stand up to stop it. I don’t want to sell to women! I’d rather sell to rich men…”
So there you go. That’s a snob, helping others.
Good luck.

Virgo Wants a Date
Hi Elsa,
Why don’t guys ever ask me out? I have no trouble attracting sleazy guys in clubs. But when I meet a guy I want to ask me out, he never does.
I’ve had guys tell me I’m beautiful, and when I dress nicely, I get enough looks from strangers. I don’t think I’m boring either. I just don’t know why guys don’t show any interest in me.
It’s a little annoying, because I’d like a boyfriend. I want to settle into a nice committed relationship with the right guy. I’m just worried that the way things have been going for the past 21 years, I’m never going to find anyone who wants me.
Well, that’s not true - I’m not worried about that, really. But I’d like to know what I’m doing wrong, if I’m doing something wrong, and how to do it right. Also, if I do meet a boy I like… any hints on how to him to ask me out?
Thanks!
Double Virgo
Dear Virgo,
Well, I’m glad you wrote. You really need to get the game and I’ll try to help. Here’s a bunch of information for your Virgo brain to parse.
First, you have a massive amount of Virgo in your chart. You have other things, but we’re talking about your Virgo because as you may know, Virgo is represented by the Virgin - an unmarried woman. So you are “self-contained” and people can see this. They can see that you can take it or leave it, but can you?
I don’t think so.
See, here’s the cosmic joke of your chart… which you may not think is all that funny. Your Virgo falls in the seventh house, where the seventh house represents marriage and relationships.
So basically this means you are an unmarried woman who craves partnership. It doesn’t have to be a husband. But you need a running buddy at the very least, and it may help to acknowledge this.
Now around the idea of getting someone to ask you out, you may want to rethink that. Because it doesn’t work for you and here’s a clue why. You have an Aquarius rising, which gives a fairly aloof and masculine “first handshake”. That’s okay. Lots of people love Aquarians - I know I do. But acting coy and girly is never going to work for you. Ever.
Judging from your chart, what will work is asserting yourself and acting on impulse. So this is what I recommend: next time you see some tasty guy, send him a drink. And a wink.
Er… just do what comes naturally, because you’re completely equipped. Good luck!

Saying I Love You - Saturn Conjunct Mercury
Dear Elsa,
My boyfriend and I have been together for nearly three years. In nearly all aspects, the relationship is wonderful. He is good to me and to my son. He is intelligent, funny, very attractive… he’s everything that I could want.
But after three years, he has not once said that he loves me. Not one single time. I have tried to bring it up on several occasions. He knows that I love him. And I’m sure that he loves me as well. What could be stopping him from just saying the words?
Thank you,
Listening Intently
Dear Listening,
What a quandary. What a puzzle. What an interesting question.
Of course the obvious thing to do is ask him. Not “do you love me?” because obviously he does. But “how come you never tell me you love me?” And you might follow that up with, “When you obviously do.” And then listen. Because he might just tell you.
That’s one way to play this. The other is to continue on as you’ve been doing. Which is impressive by the way. I mean, you’re twenty-three and most girls your age would be clawing all over this guy. They’d be insecure, hungry and manipulating. So you’re unique on this front which is probably why he’s so attached, huh.
Anyway, that’s what I think, but it didn’t seem like enough. So I looked at his chart. I wanted to help you, but besides that, I was curious!
Turns out he’s got Saturn (fear and impediment) conjunct his Mercury (speech). He’s scared, hon. Those words are stuck in his throat. And it would be really good if he could get them out, but I doubt he’ll manage without your help and this is what I suggest you do.
Pick your moment and just talk to him. Tell him you know he loves you. That cat is out of the bag. Tell him it’s okay. Tell him he can say this to you and the sky’s not going to fall. That it would make you happy to hear it.
I think this will work and further, it’s one of the ways you help this man in general. You liberate him. Can you see that? This is just another one of the ways you help him get free.
Good luck

I have Aquarius envy and I admit it. Today I saw one of them at the gym. Had to be. He was about sixty-five and wearing a dish towel around his head, knotted in the back. No one else is going to be seen in public like that. It reminded me of my old pal, the double Aquarius who went out with a chunky turquoise bracelet draped over her ear. It worked too.
The guy’s head towel was baby blue and I wondered if he might be a Cancer rising. A kitchen towel on your head, as a first handshake? Could be. I was amused.
I watched as he popped off his treadmill and crossed the gym to have a chat with someone thirty years younger and of a vastly different skin color.
Yep. Aquarian all right.

Shopping For Virgo
Hey Elsa -
It’s my birthday next week, and I feel bad for my wife. You see, I’m really hard to shop for. To be honest, I don’t really want anything at all. Gifts make me sorta uncomfortable, and I’m pretty happy with the things I have now.
I love her immensely, and just having her in my life makes me very happy. But I know that she would like to get me something, and I don’t know what to tell her. Do you know what I want for my birthday?
Thanks,
Birthday Boy
Dear Birthday Boy,
Ha ha ha. Yes I do! You damned Virgos are virtually impossible to shop for. The last thing you want is for someone to lavish attention on you. Or even worse spend a bunch of cash! I mean come on. Some big elaborate gift in your lap, while victims of hurricane Katrina are suffering? I don’t think so!
Number one, you want to talk! She should take you out for a simple dinner and let you talk and talk and talk and talk.
Number two, you want to screw!! That Virgo virgin thing is a ruse. All Virgos have a secret life and it’s frequently pretty kinky. Like the chaste librarian in her glasses. All she really wants is for someone to rip ‘em off, and kiss her hard.
So there’s your birthday. This’ll work for you, but if she wants to go deluxe, here’s the key to loving a Virgo: Virgos like to WORK. They want to work. They need to work and furthermore, others need them to work.
And this is very hard for non-Virgos to understand. Virgos don’t want to lie around. They don’t want to vacation for a month. Pulllllease! They need food (healthy food), they need sex (Virgo’s an earth sign) and they need to serve (in the same way a bird needs to fly).
If your wife could grasp, understand, and embrace this - well, it would be the very best gift she could bestow. Imagine it. What if she could recognize this about you? Then she could say, “Honey, you’re getting a little twitchy. You’re looking not so well. Do you have some work to do?”
::laughs::
You’d be so relieved. “Well, yeah. I do, if you don’t mind…”
You think you love her immensely now? If she can do this for you, she will have your undying affection and gratitude. And as you can see, “shopping” is not involved.
I hope this helps. Happy Birthday!

Brainy Dropout - Cancer, Capricorn and a 12th House Moon
Dear Elsa,
Over the past few years of my adult life, I have made terrible career and life decisions. I’m supposed to be the ‘brainy’ one, the one that should be doing GREAT things with her life. But it hasn’t worked out that way.
First, I dropped out of school due to bullying. I tried to go back to studying… but my heart was not in it. So I joined the armed forces as an engineer… but even though I was pretty darn good at the job, I just was not happy. I realized I was just trying to make my parents happy and proud, and so I dropped out.
There have been many other career paths that I have failed at. It’s getting to a point where I don’t want to try anymore. I feel completely lost. I have no direction in my life and no sense of purpose. I do try to come up with new ideas to make it all seem worthwhile, like trying to get my degree or maybe setting up my own business. But I just can’t seem to make any of these things happen. All I do is dream.
I’m lost and sad with no one to turn to. Please help!
Sign me,
Hurting
Dear Hurting,
I agree you are a brainy one. You’re twenty-three years old and you just laid out your whole birth chart! Your whole character, I mean. Everything you need to know about you is in your post. Most people reach thirty, forty, or even fifty and still have no idea who they are.
Now here’s my advice. SLOW DOWN. Slow way down, and take each of these things one by one. It’s like this:
You’ve frantic because you’ve identified all these parts of your personality and they don’t just automatically gel together. Imagine a body moving herky-jerky style as opposed to all the muscle groups working together to create movement that is smooth and flowing. For some people this comes easy. But others have to train and you’re one of them. So let me take this apart for you.
- You have Cancer in your chart and your parents matter. You also need to hole up now and then.
- You have Capricorn in your chart and you need to achieve. You are also inordinately hard on yourself.
- You have a twelfth house moon. You need to dream.
Get it?
Now go up there and read your post. Can you see how these sides of you are in a state of chaos? They are. And you’re going to have to slow way, WAY down if you want to untangle this.
Your ultimate solution will respect all sides of yourself. Like this:
Go to work at a job with status (Capricorn)… call Mom when you get home (Cancer)… and then unplug the phone, turn on the music and drift (Twelfth house Moon).
You’re brilliant for a reason. It’s so you can figure this out. And your dreams can help. You can do it, and nothing is more classy than that.
Good luck.

Rocky Marriage
Dear Elsa,
I’ve been going through a lot of trouble with my spouse lately. I’ve asked him to leave, but he refuses. And I can only push him so far, before I give in and let him stay. I know he should go - it would be best for everyone involved. But when he’s begging to stay, I just can not tell him to leave.
I guess what I want to know is, how do you let go?
Signed,
Lost
Dear Lost,
Such a simple letter, but your chart is revealing. I know you’re overwhelmed. You’re plumb up a creek - and if you read here regularly, you might expect I’m going to tell you to just throw the bastard out.
But you’re not going to get away with that, are you? Obviously not. And I’m sorry. See, to kick him out, you need BOUNDARIES. And with a massive Neptune transit like yours, you’re just not going to be able to maintain any. Because it’s just like you say: you draw a line and it disappears. You put up a wall and it melts.
So here’s my idea: start thinking about slipping out yourself. And I have an example of this, that I learned in a self defense class I took.
The instructor was going over different ways a woman might be attacked. In one of them, the attacker literally picks a woman up in a bear hug, lifts her off the ground and carries her to a waiting van. And you know what most women do when that happens? Ninety nine percent of the time, they tense up. They’ll tense every muscle in their body, which makes them ultra easy to carry.
But you know what? In that situation, if you go completely LIMP… it becomes inordinately difficult to carry “the body”. In fact, most of the time you will slip down to the ground, where you can kick a kneecap, get your ass up and RUN!
So you get the picture. You can get out, but you need to be tricky. Start thinking along these lines - escape - and I think you’ll find your way.
Good luck.
